Then I reboot the modem and get even better sync speed on the modem and speed tests at 25/9.5.
I'm wondering if that new firmware is a bit weird or if there is something (not so) "magical" about getting a sync from Bell's network... ;)

FWIW, I have the default random Bell credentials for the PPPoE login on the Sagemcom and I'm using a router to handle my PPPoE session to TekSavvy.

After logging the modem with Bell's account, it upgraded right away to:

... And telnet kept working without having to repatch it!
Note that there was no rescue version before.

Here is a quick script for re-enabling telnet, if need be:

PS if anyone from Bell's management reads this. Next time you spend millions for a custom product you should request these self-diagnostics are included in the web GUI instead of making the little guy jump through hoops to get them. I saw other ISPs using Sagem with much more elaborate options in the GUI. It's a bit ridiculous why you would exclude something so simple with no harm.

I'm using the Sagemcom as a straight modem connected to a Tomato/USB modded router.

Update seems to have re-enabled my DHCP server though my wireless is still disabled.

Beyond that I can see anything obviously new/different in the firmware so this looks like an under the hood fix.

No, because the sagemcom has its own built in login for that... As long as the Internet LED is blue, it will work.

Thats unless you have entered the test@test login in it on purpose, then the internet LED is red and the firmware will not be updated.

That's what I think too. I'm on the test@test with no idea what the Bell service account password is without doing another factory reset. My issues followed across two modems so I don't think firmware will fix it anyway. But it's been 22 hours since the last one....

edit-> make that 8 minutes since the last reconnect. :(

I don't have much hope that it will fix the reconnect issues I have so I'm not anxious to reconfigure just for this. I'll likely have already bypassed the modem by the 29th by using a temp cable modem connection unless by magic it is stable between now and then. I'm remote to the location so it won't be easy to juggle the config several times for this update.
