 | Bell won't let TSI port my number? Called up TSI this weekend to inquire about their phone service (real phone line, not TekTalk). After giving my home phone number, I was told that my number could not be ported (Bell won't let them). This restriction only applies to a real phone line, I can still port my number for TekTalk.
I'm confused, I thought LNP is mandated by the CRTC? And why would Bell do this? If I can't port my number over to a competitor which is leasing their line (i.e. Bell still gets a cut), then I'll just go to voip.ms and Bell will get nothing. |

| Because HBELL raised rates and they don't want to lose revenue by too many people leaving , i think 'desperate' is the correct term ... Just remember if you cancel your home phone you will need a dryloop if on DSL . Of course this does not apply to cable .... |

 | reply to achalupka Port the number to voip.ms or Wind for a bit Then port it to TSI
Just make sure that's possible with all the parties involved. |

Just make sure that's possible with all the parties involved. Or, just port it to voip.ms and leave it there. Buy beer with the money saved.
I don't see why users need to do a hop skip and jump around TSI's agreement with Bell. No offense, and sorry but, fuck 'em.

IIRC the problem remains regardless of whether the number is a transfer from Bell or a port in from another provider if the phone number itself has a NXX originally assigned to Bell. |

 | Shouldn't matter The numbers belong to us the customers not to The Incumbents or phone providers.. we should be allowed to port em how and where we want to. -- Every time Someone leaves Sympatico an Angel gets its wings.

Anyway, the problem is between Teksavvy and Bell... nothing else here. |

Mike Nothing to say sorry about, end of the day it's true... voip.ms is great, i use voipdiscount.com $10 get's me unlimited for 120 days and then takes from the $10 i deposited. Each year i pay about $20.
Another good option i'm amazed many do not choose is freephoneline.ca or .com forget which.
Free #, $50 up front for an ATA setup and you never pay again unless you need to call specific areas.
Sorry TSI, end of day POTS is bell and i honestly wish you guys would just drop them from POTS line at least. You'd make them too happy if you dumped them altogether, so let's not do that |

Not technically... more like practically... since you don't really own that number, it just fells that way. |

The way in which it was explained in one or two other recent threads is that in this case, TSI is a DIRECT RESELLER of a Bell service, so the number is not being ported anyway, in the sense about which the CRTC has made those LNP rules.
As for porting in a number which was ORIGINALLY a Bell landline number but is currently with another provider, I'm not sure whether or not anyone has actually TRIED to have that done (or is just making assumptions), and whether such a person has posted anything here about how THAT went.
TSI Marc has commented in those other threads, and what I personally took from his comments is that Bell has raised the price to TSI to do that 'non-porting' type of POTS service transfer (and/or for the service itself) if TSI wants it done on more than so many numbers per so much period of time, and that TSI has chosen to limit to US how many because their costs went up.
I have no clear proof of this, but it 'walks like a duck', and makes a quacking sound.
Another factor ( ALSO money-based - surprise, surprise ! ) is that TSI now has a VoIP service to promote, and is indirectly doing so by handling things as they currently are. |
