1 edit | Rental Fee for Modem for phone service, etc?? HI Well over a year ago I got rid of the Comcast modem and bought a Motorola modem to use for my internet service. As the monthly bill got higher, I called Comcast and was talked into a triple play package with tv, phone and internet. I asked the service rep is there a monthly charge for the modem and was told NO,,, there was no charge for the new Arris modem rental because the phone service worked over the modem. Now,,, I get the newest bill and,,,,, there is a monthly modem rental fee on the bill!!!! Before I jump and holler and scream,,,, Do I really have to pay the modem rental fee. Again,,, I have the triple play and was told,,, there would not be a rental fee for the modem. I live in the pittsburgh area. |

 | I do not know about your area but they are a $7.00 a month emta rental charge in most areas. I believe they told you a false statement about the charge. -- Caddy |

| reply to pghpooh Sounds like the salesperson did not realize that you were not paying modem rental for your cable modem. He would have been correct, in that whether you have an emta, or an emta plus a plain cable modem, there is only one equipment charge rate of $7.
You can buy your own emta, but be very, very careful! You need to buy an absolutely new unit...there are a lot of emta's out there that have been misappropriated and won't be provisioned by Comcast.
Amazon is now selling new Arris 822G emta's that are worth buying. The older 722G emtas, while good, are not the latest model. -- Deeds, not words |

 | reply to Ripper As far as I know the only purchased EMTA Comcast will provision is one purchased from them at Best Buy. |

 | reply to pghpooh Check Best Buy. I know Philly and Pittsburgh stores carry them and they can be activated. Central PA, however, still cannot buy them.
Some areas can, some can't. |

 | reply to pghpooh HI Thanks for the info. I am 100% sure that the Comcast rep told me there was not a charge on the modem. BUT!!!!! I am going to call Comcast and push that fact telling them to get out the recording of my conversation with the rep and play it and then tell me I am wrong! I know i am going to loose this battle but I will get my 10 cents worth of satisfaction out of making a nuisance out of myself. The modems are available here at the Pgh Best Buy stores. Thanks |

| YMMV but when I had the "professional installation" for our Arris gateway, it simply involved the installer unpacking it from the box, connecting the coax cable, and then calling Comcast to get it activated. I kid you not, it's as simple as that. But I must confess that we already had an outlet/wiring so there wasn't really much more to do besides him "turning it on" on our box outside our house. |

 | reply to pghpooh I am in the hartford, CT area and purchased a emta from the brandsmart website. Received it and activated it no issues at all removed the fee from my bill. |
