jmycknshk posted : i had this problem once. the email was very old, still unread in my exchange mailbox, but it fell out of scope on the phone--either the range of email that the phone was set to sync was too short, or the phone ran out of storage and didn't keep the message. once i dug deeper with the phone, and went through everything i had, i found the offending email and marked as read.
--

anon posted : This is a bug in iOS. I can't tell you how many times I've reported it to Apple and the idiots still have yet to fix it. This happens when you delete an unread message from your Inbox and quickly go to your Deleted Items folder and as it syncs over to that, the message shows up initially without it's unread flag set (this happens for maybe 1 or 2 seconds at best). Well, if you're quick enough, and you delete it during that time, the unread flag finally comes and it set the unread emails to (1) but your message is now permanently gone and you cannot change that (1). The only way to fix this is to delete the account and set it back up again. There are other ways to get around this but that entails the fact that you must have a limited amount of days you have your email set to sync down to your phone. For example, if you have it set for a week, waiting a week will cause the (1) to possibly go away since that tag will be nixed by the sync timeframe after that time passes. However, if you have no limit set to your sync, you're hosed. You need to just delete the account and sync it again on the phone.
