Re: Check a website for legitimacy? I use the Web-of-Trust addon for Firefox and Iron (my preferred privacy-enhanced version of Chrome). to check sites for reports of malware. I think McAfee and Symantec and many other AV companies have similar tools, but AFAIK most of them are not free.
Unfortunately some malicious political activists have decided to use WoT's community-rating scheme as a way of flagging climate-skeptic sites as "untrustworthy", so WoT has "false positives" on many of these sites.
