Bridge the Shaw device, get a proper router and get it near the middle of your place if at all possible. Also, I would play with DNS settings. My DHCP and DNS are done server-based, but I've been using google for DNS for over a year and haven't had a single hiccup.
The ping is rather consistance at 100 ms see the think I like about using google's dns is when you have a consistant 100ms ping to a server with .100 in its quadrent and it leaves open a variety of technics which allow gate jumping easily for internal lan accelerators. Dont mind me I will just be eating corn chips in the corner, Im the guy with the tinfoil hat.
