Playon Holiday Sale




For those interested, Playon is currently having a holiday sale.

PlayOn is media server software for your Windows PC. With PlayOn, you can use your home network to magically stream your favorite online shows, movies, and home media files from your PC to your TV, smart phone, or tablet. To display videos on your TV, PlayOn relies on a game console or other supported device such as a Roku.

Playon is a premium channel that allows you to access over 55 channels of programming, much of it channels that you have to have cable tiers beyond basic to access. There are also about 63 plug-in channels that you can add to the service, created by the community to address various interests.

I use it with a Roku device and am happy with it. Your computer runs as a server for it on your home network.

Tempting! All the channels seem like they could be bandwidth cap-killers though. If this is installed on an HTPC, can you stream stuff locally (I.e., to the TV attached to the PC)? Their pages only list all of the other devices it can stream to.

PlayOn aggregates video content from the web so regardless of your set up, the PC that has PlayOn installed is going to get that content from the Internet and yes, it will count towards your usage.

However, streaming it from the PlayOn PC to any other device/player on your LAN will not count towards your usage.
