[OS X] External hard drive

Hi,

I am looking to buy an external hard drive and I was wondering how much it mattered if one was 5400 RPM and the other 7200 RPM.

I am looking at The OWC Mercury On-The-Go Pro with firewire. I can get a 1 TB @5400 RPM for $145 or a 750 GB @7200 RPM for$139. 1 TB at 7200 goes up to $195. My Mac has a 250 GB hard drive.

Since both drives come with a free copy Carbon Copy Cloner I will be using this drive to make a disk image.

Thanks,
Logan

for FW800 it won't matter what speed you get, if you get USB3 I would get 7200rpm.

Hi,

Thank you, my Macbook Pro is from Mar 2010 and only has USB2. Since it does not matter with firewire I will go with the 1 TB at 5400.

If it is bus powered I would think 5400 would be better anyway, maybe less power consumption.

Hi,

Yes it is bus powered and I will end up with the 5400 I'm sure.

On a side note, since I had been upgrading my 120GB SSDs to 256GB SSD's I had 2 sitting around.

I picked up one of these on a whim

And it works. I know, shocking. On my rMBP with USB 3 I see 200MB/s in disk throughput tests, good considering one of the SSDs is SATAI.

Great thing is that it IS bus powered. It's about the same footprint as my old Galaxy S WiFi 5" about about 1" thick.
