[ADSL2] Speeds back down again
After considerable troubleshooting a couple months ago, my download speed has dropped again. Could I have a tech test the line? Our modem has the following status:
This information reflects the current status of your DSL connection.
Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 819
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 835
Date/Time: Sat Dec 8 22:20:17 2012
Line Coding: Trellis On
Status: No Defect
Link Power State: L0
SNR Margin (dB): 32.3 9.9
Attenuation (dB): 46.5 27.2
Output Power (dBm): 16.1 12.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 4788 887
Rate (Kbps): 835 819
LATN (dB): 46.5 27.2
SATN (dB): 46.5 0.0
Line tests here show that your line is running about 25 percent of normal speed. I'll have a tech contact you so we can troubleshoot further.
Update: I was finally able to call in, and the standard troubleshooting revealed no change in the situation. The tech opened a ticket with Verizon, and although I have no update on that in my account, at some point in the last four hours our speed came right back up to full. Here are the new details from the DSL modem:
SNR Margin (dB): 8.2 10.1
Attenuation (dB): 47.5 26.6
Output Power (dBm): 12.6 12.3
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 6200 939
Rate (Kbps): 3360 863
LATN (dB): 47.5 26.6
SATN (dB): 47.5 0.0
I'm surprised that the SNR margin and attainable rate changed so dramatically. Both had been at the previously posted numbers since before our speed dropped. Could you see if Verizon responded to the ticket already, and if so, what they did?
Just finished checking with Verizon; in a word, nope. They claim they didn't do anything to the circuit. Of course, it's entirely possible they did some repair on the DSLAM or other part of the network for another user that also happened to fix yours as well, which wouldn't be registered on your ticket.
Checked line readings from our end, and it's definitely looking MUCH better now... so honestly not sure why it's doing so much better now. Keeping the ticket open with Verizon for the moment so we can investigate further; it may be an intermittent issue, so please let us know if it drops back down and gives you trouble again.
Thanks, Nick. This time I didn't even touch or disconnect any wire whatsoever. The comtrend modem seems to be more capable of maintaining a connection even when the signal is bad, but it really does seem like stuff keeps happening on the Verizon side. They haven't been playing on the poles outside, but something must be going on. I'll let you know right away if it drops again.
