Re: Exterior Outlet Upgrade

said by ilikeme:

This reminds me of something I found at my parents old house. I went to replace an outside single outlet with a duplex GFCI and when I removed the old outlet I discovered that there was no box behind it at all! It appeared to have been broken or removed. The outlet had just been screwed to the siding as a "repair" by a previous owner.

When I replaced my siding a few years ago, the outlet on the front of the house had a box installed. However the T1-11 that was originally used appears to have just been installed over the box. To cut the opening, they just whacked at the box a few times with a hammer to punch a hole. The outlet was then secured though the carefully cut holes with a few sheet metal screws that they had laying around not into the box, but just the T1-11 siding. At least they used a semi-waterproof cover. Somehow it survived that way for over 30 years.
