[Northeast] FiIOS Downoad Speeds

Click for full size
My FiOS download speeds have been underpforming lately (Philly area). Even the FiOS Bandwith meter is testing way low. I'm on 50/25. Curious if others are experiencing slowness. »speedtest.verizon.net

Do a tracert to affected sites. This is a major issue around the tri-state area. Other threads here talk about this now.

Also, run this speed test instead:
»speedtest.verzion.com/fios300

Most of the issues happen between 7pm and 11pm.

Just be sure and try a variety of tests. Java, Flash, testmy.net, etc

I try to rely most on the NDT Java Tests. These are very official used by Universities.

»ndt.anl.gov:7123/

FCC Speed test also Java based and good

Unfortunately there's a number of things that could be going on. If you're on MoCA (Coax), what I've seen happen is a huge amount of ACK errors / re-transmits on the upstream. I recently went through a problematic N Gigabit Actiontec that ended up being a problem. So if you can try to test cat5e to ONT from PC.

You might be going through the same slow routing between Verizon and Level 3.

Can you do a tracert to a few places to confirm during the times your speeds slow down?
This should be fine: 8.8.8.8
This should show the problem: 4.2.2.2 or 208.67.222.222

Once again, there are a few threads here with some information about this issue. Everyone just doesn't talk about it because its been happening since Sandy, its only on half the routing, there is nothing we can do about it.

Once again, the problem occur during peak times, usually 8pm till 10pm. Try then before stating there are "no problems here".

Unless they did something about it and didn't want to tell me it was my AVAST! Anti-Virus that is causing the problem. I disabled it and my speeds have gone up.

I think this is more issue of speedtest servers

now on speedtest.net some servers could not reach 80 mbps it was like 78 etc..

I did example test on xfinity with 1 laptop streaming TV at 2 mbps so speed is about right

I am in Queens , NY

What part of Queens, NY is 1200 miles from NJ?

lol yea that looks strange I would not have 11 ms ping if it was 1200 miles

That would be a pretty impressive ping for 1200 miles.

I'm still having the problem. Always happens at night. I don't know what the issue is, but Verizon came to my house today at 8 in the morning, needed to get in touch with teir 2, and they weren't around, so the tech said he would call back. I'm hoping he comes back tomorrow and starts looking around to figure this out. For people who don't sit around downloading 24/7 and work 9-5 jobs, if the speed we are going to get from 7pm-12am is 1/10 the advertised speed, I'm gonna expect a big portion of my internet bill to be decreased. It's really ridiculous. This morning when the tech came, my speedtest was perfect. This is the speedtest from the same servers right now »www.imagebam.com/image/a4dec4226271525
Didn't know how to post a small picture on the page, but I am getting 20 Mbps down, when I should be getting 150.

Nah it's not their speed test. Just did one now, 154Mbps down, 66up. I notice when trying to download files when I have the problem as well. Sometimes the download maxes out at 15Mbps, sometimes 26Mbps. There is definitely something wrong. Either the pon is getting saturated ,meaning Verizon oversold it, or the issue is routing through another network, but something is wrong, and it should not be happening. If it is something that Verizon can not correct then I should get charged for internet what people on a 25/25 plan get.
Here is the comcast server test. Slower than Verizon's at the moment »stage.results.speedtest.comcast.···6952.png
113down, 52up

If the destination server cannot supply enough bandwidth(for whatever reason), then not even a gigabit/second connection from Verizon will help you. Next time you notice a slowdown in your downloads from this server, do a speedtest immediately. If you get 150mb/s+ then it's the server's end that's the problem.

I've done this plenty of times. Multiple different websites, different downloads. Whether I do a speedtest or look at the download speeds, they all point to the same thing, my download speeds are much slower than what is being advertised and something is wrong. If I knew what the problem was, and it was out of Verizon's hands to be able to fix it, I wouldn't be happy per-say but at least I would know what is going on. I'm tired of doing tests. Had the tech recall me today. Hopefully he comes back during the evening and I do have the problem when he is here so we can try to figure it out.

I've had good results using TCP Optimizer.

It's also windows7-savvy.

Also, with a speedtest that is that out of whack, I'd look for a speed/duplex mismatch somewhere in your network.

Try the us gov test and the NJ
Java test on this site. I am near you and have been getting reasonably consistent good speed tests that fit my purchased tier.
