[TekTalk] Review of Premium package with Bell Fibe DSL

Greetings,

I've signed up and set up TekSavvy's TekTalk Premium ($14.95) VOIP package recently, and wanted to share my experience.

First, some background information. My Internet service provider is Bell. My DSL plan is the "Fibe 6" with 6Mbit/s download 1Mbit/s upload transfer rate. I'm using a rented 2Wire modem (model Gateway 2701HG-G) as my router. I purchased a Cisco SPA122-RC ATA from TekSavvy, and it's plugged directly into the 2wire router section.

TekSavvy's sales support was kind and helpful along the way. Customer support during the process was courteous as well. During the weekends or evenings before 9pm there was an up to 10 minute wait at times for an agent. During off-peak times, the call was answered immediately.

TekTak is a pre-payed service, so after my payment was received, an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) was shipped to me. This was the only piece of equipment that I needed to connect to the service.

When I received the ATA, I plugged it into the router, and my phone into the appropriate port. Then, I had to forward port 5060 TCP and UDP to the automatically detected device.

From this point on, the phone worked with a temporary phone number provided. No issues.

To my ears, voice quality is equal to that of my regular home phone. I currently have both services, and left a message on my answering machine through Bell home phone and TekTalk VOIP and heard no difference when there is no load on my network.

The only issue that i've encountered is that i'm unable to log into my Cisco SPA122-RC ATA through the interface. The connection is rejected. I've even turned on WA access to the administration web interface through the IVR, but still have no access to it. I'm not sure why this is.

Meegwetch.

Hello,

I'm happy to hear that everything worked for you without any problems. If you don't mind me asking, What settings did you want to change in the ATA? The reason I ask, Is because alot of the settings you would change in the ATA can be changed in the tektalk portal.

Let me know and I'll help you as much as possible.

Thanks for your reply Jon,

I wanted to change the codec to G.711u to see if there was a noticeable difference in call quality. I also wanted to increase the length of time that I have to start dialing after I pick up the phone.

Ok,

Now you have noted that the ATA is plugged into a router. Is the computer plugged into the ATA or is it too plugged into the router. If into the router, Try plunging into the ATA box direct, in the Ethernet Jack, and see if you can access the voip gateway then. Often times it will give you the "gateway IP" and this is usually the ip for the ATA.

Word of Advise:

#1)Back up your existing configuration. Especially if you are changing settings in the ATA, sometimes they do not switch back fully (talking from experience)

To do this - Click Administration, Then under "config management" click backup configuration.

#2)Please do not upgrade the firmware on the ATA. This will essentially "brick" the ATA, and cause it not to function properly.

Other than that, Happy tweaking!

Any questions please ask!

Thank you. The computer was also plugged into the router. After plugging it into the ATA's ethernet port I am able to access the administrative web console.

I appreciate the solid advice. I'll be sure to back up the configuration when making changes. And i'll be sure not to update the firmware.

- Kat

An extremely basic one, if that...

true. but it does have some routing if it has a wan port and some lan ports. I'm not advocating for this ata in any way.

Hey JonF,

I've been having difficulties using a softphone with my tektalk service. When placing a phone call, I get a 501 Forbidden error.

I'm using the Android operating system, and have tried a few different different connection configurations. Notably, I've tried using voip.teksavvy.com as my outbound proxy as suggested by a technical support rep at TSI, also switching between UDP and TCP for the transport protocol.

I'm stumped as to why the softphone isn't working. Do you have any insight on how to resolve this isssue that you could share?

Can you tell me what software you are using? I'll install it on my G3 and get it to work and post the settings here.

Ah, thanks Jon. One application I'm using is CSipSimple.
