I've been a Shaw cable subscriber for many years. I am currently subscribed to the highest tear connection I could get at the time (I was ported from Extreme to Broadband 100/150 or whatever it is).
I cannot get a YouTube video to play at 1080. I understand the distributed caching system google provides, dns systems and all kinds of other barriers to performance - but I would like to know why I cannot stream a 1080 video (the average video, with average A/V settings should only require ~2000 kbps MAX to stream ahead of the scrub). The problem is isolated to YouTube (vimeo, putlocker, ustream, twitch, etc all work mostly better). The issue has become seemingly worse in the last 4 months, although it has always been an issue (at least since switching from the old packages a year+ ago).
I thought I'd post here before calling Shaw, to see if anyone else experiences this issue.
I've had problems with Shaw in the past, selling me a higher tier internet while not providing the service level promised, and I've been a patient customer, and we've had a stable relationship. I've had great help in this forum before, when a Shaw rep on here was the only one able to get me up to speed. I'm happy to work together to resolve the issue, but I'm afraid that I may be forced to seek compensation for more false advertising.
I'm seeking other people's experiences, opinions, and explanations on why this may be happening. I'd really like to work together with Shaw on this, and remain a loyal customer. I don't like to be lied to, and I don't like to be taken advantage of.
Im in Edmonton and Ive been having major youtube issues recently. Im on BB250 and the only way I can get any youtube HD to stream properly is to tether to my blackberry.
I am in Lethbridge and seems they are still having major issues with YouTube which started yesterday. Its not only youtube it seems almost any streaming of video buffers and buffers.
I am not seeing any packet loss and traceroutes seems decent to everything i tested.

I've got mine running bridged on the 250 unlimited.. still having the YouTube issues even when i can saturate both upload and download to closer local nodes... YouTube is literally the only one that is consistent on breaking up video content, usually streams fine for first 10 seconds and then its a pause every 3-5 seconds of play as it tries to catch up. Guessing its cheap routing again, as Shaw will use the cheapest way to get your traffic where it needs to go, regardless of performance. I can count a period of 2 days it wasn't bad, and that was right after they upgraded southern Alberta (even though I am in Edmonton). During this time my p2p was pushing 1.5MB up for a 2 days (until i assume they got their monitoring and crippling gear set up on the newer system).
Couple days later it was back to the same filtered and throttled garbage and its been the same ever since. Its almost as though content passed from YouTube is getting affected by Shaw's p2p throttling system and seeing the negative impact of this. Worse than this its almost like they are using a QOS type of filtering where Business packages get the top level of traffic priority and the basic user packages get whats left over. I realize that these are strange accusations but this is exactly the type of inverse affect on performance that would happen in this case. I have a really hard time Understanding how clients are getting 8K/sec over high speed from my P2P when I call into Shaw and they tell me my node is not saturated and not using any throttling. How can you serve over 70 individual files with multiple users connecting to each one and not be able to break 3Mbit/Sec avg on a 15Mbit plan unless the client is connecting to you via IPv6 which Shaw isn't throttling. The last bit speaks for itself... with Shaw having no ability to throttle the connection it works fine. The only other remaining explanation is that everyone of the several hundred peers has THEIR ISP THROTTLING THEM, and this seems extremely unlikely. Also possible is the fact that their monitoring hardware itself is over saturated, and any traffic passing through monitoring will slow down regardless if its throttled or not. Are business package users also having this issue with YouTube, or does it seem limited to the home user packages??
I'm afraid that i have had this issue with Youtube over Shaw for so long that i am beginning to accept the fact it will never work properly, which is exactly what Shaw wants, the user to accept it and stop asking for it to work correctly.
I can max out my bandwidth very easily with both downloads and torrents. YouTube 1080p does seem to have some issues loading lately. I have BB50, DPC3825 bridged and using RT-N16
BTW im in Edmonton and Have no trouble saturating 250/15 and no performance issues on any sites.
Enough one line troll posts already. Lets see who the liar here is... You live in Beaumont, that's not Edmonton and is like comparing cable in Edmonton to cable in Sherwood Park. But since you insist on trolling here, troll this link and see for yourself what level of YouTube streaming service Shaw provides.

Actually I have residence's in summerside, millwoods and currently my brother as well in summerside. And there is no issue. Im guessing it most likely a problem with you pc
You're guessing wrong.... There's more than one PC, and they all have the same results with or without connecting directly to the Cisco modem itself or using a switch/router in between. 2 of them are HP proliant servers, proprietary enterprise class hardware with no changes. Video taken above was from a 3 day old windows 7 install on a x980 CPU w/SLI 580GTX, its not using no cheap realtek onboard NIC either. Even different cables have been tried and everything upgraded to cat6. »www.b-com.ca/INTEL-GIGAB ··· ess.html Speedtest.shaw.ca showing 220/13 at this time yet the YouTube still suffers.
Baud, enough of your random spewing. There is nothing wrong with streaming Youtube on Shaw. There could definitely be issues, however if speeds are fine on the line, it's obviously hardware related. What does proaliant machines have anything do with this? I can stream just fine with my TS VM running on esxi-5.1 on a poweredge R710, but that doesn't have anything to do with the issue at hand. I would suggest trying a different DNS. Personally at home and work, DNS and DHCP are done on my DC with DNS forwarding to Google DNS only and it works beautifully. May be some issues with DNS. I would start with that and see what that does.
Didn't realize there were so slow users here.. To clarify.
Obviously i made the point that it was tested on several different machines, even ones that were not built by me just to prove that it WAS NOT a hardware issue, don't see how you are lacking the common sense to overlook this.
How you can say its hardware related when i clearly stated its 4 different pieces of hardware is beyond me. Maybe its your eagerness to post insults that is clouding your judgement.
Another user from Edmonton here. Youtube HD is horrendously slow. I am on the broadband 25 and didnt have this problem before. 1080p is slow as hell and takes a long time to buffer.
PLEASE, someone post some real data instead of speculation. No one here can help you until you provide some factual data. Try changing DNS, post some speeds test, connect something directly to the modem. Anything, really.
Posting "I can't stream youtube" will get you nowhere. Could be speed issues, routing issues, etc. Give more information.
The only input you have provided was a video of trying to stream a video on Youtube and a link to a nic card. You haven't provided speedtests, DNS information, tracerts, directly connected to modem, etc. Get out of your bubble and do some basic troubleshooting
This is why I was getting upset with your posts, the very things you are saying I have not provided were in the post you flamed, if you simply took the time to read it.
Not only did I do "basic troubleshooting" on one machine, I did it on several. Naturally when you come back and say its a "hardware issue" without actually reading the post and seeing that they are separate machines, I can't take you very seriously.
I wouldn't bother the forum with basic troubleshooting, if an issue was so simple that speedtest or tracert would show it there would be no need ask for input in a forum. There's no point wasting anybody's time with trivial red herring information and pictures of speedtests that show no issues, or redundant flaming.
Onto something constructive... you mention some good advice here:

Based on your own settings the default DNS Shaw is providing are not working correctly.. how can you say this isn't Shaw's issue when you yourself have to make changes to their default configuration?
You just highlighted points you say you have done, yet still haven't provided any real data to support the fact you have tried these. Not even a single tracert has been provided. When someone says they've tried tracerts and speedtests, I don't believe anything till I see some proof. Once you actually provide us some data instead of highlighting what you have tried, no one will bother to help. We need information to see and work off of, not sure your word.
I the post above doesn't make sense to you I give up, common reading comprehension is obviously not your forte. I'd draw a picture but even the video clearly didn't do the trick.
Just don't come on here acting like Shaw has no issues and attempting to derail the thread when even you yourself need to change their default settings for your own setup to work. Its not honest to mislead readers this way.
I've never used the Shaw DNS for a personal preference, not because theirs has issues. You need to go take your A+ again as you've fallen far off the basics.
If only your networking skills were as good as your video recording skills, we wouldn't be having this discussion .
Good luck man. I was on BB100 a while ago and had saturation problems on my node and yes, YouTube issues as well. It is a Shaw issue with routing and you won't get much luck from fixing this issue. Best advice, go with a non cable internet provider.
Your best price/performance ratio package would probably be with Teksavvy 25 DSL. It's 10x slower than your theoretically 250Mbit/s but you get unlimited bandwidth at less than a 1/4th the cost.
Look at this ladies, loaded 3 1080p HD test videos on Youtube at the same time, imagine that! You should definitely switch to a Telus reseller. I'll even pay your first month so I can bid you farewall.
Really struggling here with my terrible Shaw routing, saturated node issues here, help me someone. It's definitely nothing on my side of things...
Impressive. You almost reached my maximum. How about downloading a BD50 disc off usenet, playing 3 4k YouTube steams and bragging about your internet connection more than trying to help keep from Shaw losing a customer. Really, nobody gives a shit what you can do with your connection. If you can't help the fellow out, stfu.
Got 3 videos streaming along at 1080p now. Really are some nice videos on youtube, isn't there? Some nice high quality videos to test issues. Anyone wants, can come over and stream youtube all day long here. No charge, unless you want your own VM on my hyper-v machine to play with
Also, Shaw is better off without a customer like him. He's more of a pain to deal with than to keep him. It's part of business. Some just aren't worth the hassle to have.

Funny a machine can move like that recording video any still have "hardware issues" eh? Can figure that out but don't know what a speed test is... And you question my troubleshooting process...
If you read, I wasn't epeening when i said i was running proliants like you think. not everything is a pissing contest as it seems to be from your perspective. I said it because they are proprietary hardware with no assembly required on the admins part.
A+ is irrelevant, you can't misconfigure it if you don't touch the hardware configuration. Its tested business level hardware. I know it was a bad attempt at humor but it goes to show that you really aren't reading anything posted.
More things I already mentioned in previous posts.. would quote it again but you likely would chose to overlook it a second time. Wasted enough time already trying to get through to you. People can read it for themselves.
i don't think it's a routing problem but i do think the issue is originating from Shaw. don't waste anymore time fixing the issue yourself, you won't be able to unless Shaw checks their end to find the source of the problem.
Running proaliants still has absolutely nothing to do with this. It could be a firewall/switch issue. Provide something directly to the modem with a laptop to provide some realistic data without possibility of hardware issues after the modem, it's the only truly way to tell. I would bet if you went directly to modem it works wonderfully. It's something after the modem, usually is.
