[BC] Bad xp: Price change and no notification - good bye ShawI had home telephone and Internet service with Shaw. I was paying $75 old bundle price and found out that there was new Internet plan that costs only $45 (High Speed 10).
Since I barely used home phone, I decided to drop the home phone service and use the Internet only. I made a call to change in late September. The rep kindly changed to the new High Speed 10 which cost only $45.
All of sudden, for the service from Nov-25 to Dec-24, I noticed that the price is no longer $45, but $50. I immediately checked the website, and it did say it's $50.
I made another phone call waiting 20 min in line to ask what's going on.
A lady picks up. I tell her the story and she tells Shaw notified this change to ALL customers and the change was actually made in August.
I denied it because I NEVER received any kind notice about the price change and the time I picked up this plan when it was $45 was in September and their website also was saying it's $45. I had impression of "so what?" from this lady rep. Somehow, she decided to transfer me to another rep.
A guy rep picks up. I tell what happened from beginning again. He says it is 100% my fault that I did not check their WEBSITE for changes. He said people use Internet all the time and it was very easy to notice. I was like "What?". So am I supposed to check websites of every single companies for my Internet, Phone, Mobile, Gas, Electricity, TV, and so on EVERY MONTH? - just to make sure that prices have not changed?
Really??? Do I really have to do that every month??? Do most people do that all the time just as this rep said??? Do they spend that much vacant time just to check their websites???
I was so pissed by their attitudes by that time. I know I know it's only +$5 per month but this company......I've been a royal customer for at least 7 years with Shaw.
So, I told him I want to discontinue the service with them. He laughed softly and asked if I found any other service provider that beats their prices with this GREAT confidence in his voice. I was speechless because he was obviously making fun of me on the phone as a rep of his company.
I told him I'll call another time to discontinue the service because I could use some benefit from this "Notice of class action settlement" thing for a month. He kind of giggled, said "have a nice evening" blah blah and hung up.
The notice basically says the court ordered Shaw to let customers choose benefits since they overcharged their late monthly fees for years, and my account was eligible for that.
So, I'm gonna use Shaw for just another month with upgraded internet (one of the benefits I could choose according to this notice), and say goodbye to this company.
Can someone recommend another ISP in Vancouver lower mainland area please? Is Telus good? I don't expect 100% polite representatives I don't care, but at least they must be able to listen and communicate with customers.....and notify if anything changes!!! |

You do realize that it IS your responsibility as a consumer to protect yourself in these instances.
I personally have a 6 month cycle that I look at to watch for changes.
Basic business in the modern world requires price increases as the cost of labour(cost of living) goes up. $5 is nothing, and their service(as well as their infrastructure) is what all the other providers you're thinking of going to run off of(aside from telus in some areas). Novus is good, but limited. Teksavvy runs on Shaw's infrastructure and will experience price increases accordingly. |

Unfortunately that's just the way that Shaw does business, irritating as it may sometimes be. I don't think you'll find Telus any better.
Their business model is to attract new customers with low introductory prices, and then ramp the price up continuously without attracting the customer's attention in hope that they either won't notice, or that each increase will be just below the amount that makes the customer go to the effort to change providers. They aren't going to go to any great lengths to make you aware of price increases, because their whole business model is based on price-gouging existing customers and they don't want it to come to your attention. (apologies to Shaw staffers for calling it what it is, but you know it's the truth!)
You are always free to go elsewhere any time you don't like Shaw's pricing. At least they don't lock you in to a long-term contract! |

You will not experience price increases on Teksavvys prices because shaw increased their prices. Shaw's increases to its Retail customers has nothing to do with what Teksavvy decided to do as a wholesaler. Same goes for Bell/Rogers/Telus/Cogeco, they are free to increase their costs to their customers at any time, and none of it effects Teksavvy's or other Independent ISP charges. |

You are aware that Teksavvy does a lot more business with Telus' last mile then Shaw's right? |

This is exactly why I left Shaw. Even though I was informed on the bill, the rates increased every couple of months (or so it seemed). I've noticed again since I left that they have increased yet again. Long distance is increasing from 4 cents per minute to 5? This is typical Shaw. Oh and they now charge for service moves as well. $30 to keep their service when you move.
I'm glad I left, even if TELUS Optik has a horrible PQ. I'm much happier with the level of service and support - 3 year contract pricing without the contract.
I get it that every company has a little bit of evil, but Shaw seems to have upped the ante in the last year. Nickel-and-diming every chance they get. (they have to pay for that atrocious new logo somehow) |

TELUS IS MUCH CHEAPER AND BETTER QUALITY. TEKSAVVY BUT DON'T USE SHAW'S LAST MILE, USE TELUS LAST MILE. |

I somewhat disagree. Telus' prices are really good at first because you get a 6 month intro package. It's after that it gets expensive.
If you're only buying telus internet, you also have to add "dry-loop" fees to the advertised rate your seeing, or ad an expensive phone line at 23ish dollars/month. They have no Best of HD package either, so if you're going for tv services, you have to buy a bunch of mini-bundles to get the hd channels. It really ads up.
Telus isn't nearly as competitive as they used to be. If they were, Shaw wouldn't be able keep raising their rates.
To be fair if Shaw enforces caps or implements the bump up my plan is to move my Internet services to teksavvy, and keep my TV at shaw (I think Shaw HD looks better than optik and I don't like having my internet speed at the mercy of how many cable boxes i've left on). |

I think we can all agree that while Shaw is mediocre at best, Telus is absolute trash. I'd definitely look at Novus, if it is available to you. |

TELUS raised their prices before my service was even activated, and have continued to do so. I have been with them for 7 months, and there has been a $15 increase in my monthly bill. |
