Wierd issue with Comcast and Linux..I just switched to Comcast 30 Mbps internet, and now my backup Linux PC won't connect to the internet at all.
I'm using the stock Ubee cable modem, hooked up to my trusty Zyxel X550N router.
Bizzarely,my main Windows 7 PC connects to the internet just fine.
This is too wierd. |

Are you running DHCP ? You're really not telling us anything. Is your IP address/interface (can you connect to the box locally?). What does you /etc/resolv.conf look like ? |

So the only thing that changed was the speed plan you're on? Sounds more like a problem with your Linux box not running a DHCP client properly or something that coincided with the speed change to me. As ncherry said, we need more info. |

Oddly enough,my Linux PC connected to the internet perfectly when I had my Centurylink PK5001Z gateway hooked up.
(before I returned the gateway after canceling my Centurylink internet.)
I just switched to Comcast earlier this month.
Now with my Ubee cable modem and my Zyxel X550N router hooked up.. no connection at all on my Linux PC.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 at the moment. |

I assume you have it connected like this: Ubee | Zyxel | Linux box If so, let's see output of ps auwwx and ifconfig on the Linux box. This may be more appropriate in the All Things Unix forum if it's just a problem with the Linux box getting a DHCP address from the Zyxel. » Unix and Linux |

Ifconfig says Link Encap Local Loopback: inetaddr: 127.0.0.1 Mask 255.0.0.0 .
What exactly does this mean?
(I'm completely in the dark about Linux networking.) |

(I'm completely in the dark about Linux networking.) Your ethernet device isn't configured. If you run ifconfig -a do you see an eth0 and/or eth1, etc? I am assuming this is ethernet and not wifi, but you did not specify. I'll ask the mods to move this over to ATU. It's not a Comcast isssue. |

Sorry,my bad. I wasn't really sure where to post my question.
I'm connected via Ethernet.(It's hardwired.) |

Hi,
Let's backup a bit ... first, type and paste the results of "cat /etc/issue"
You'll need to open a terminal window to do so.
What we need to know is what distro of Linux you're on so folks can provide you with the quickest way for you to configure your NIC.
Cheers, -pablo |

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit.
This is weird. When I type "cat /etc/issue" in the terminal,it says no such file or directory.Am I entering it wrong? |

Hi,
Don't worry about the fact you can't see /etc/issue, we have the data you need: you're running Ubuntu.
I'm an openSUSE person but there are tons of Ubuntu people on here who can provide you a web link on how to configure your network.
You could also google around to figure it out. What you want to do is set up DHCP.
Cheers, -pablo |

I'd prefer a link on how to set up my network,as this is very confusing for me. |

I should have mentioned, you're setting up your Linux desktop as a DHCP client NOT as a DHCP server. |
|
|
Ah crap.
Configured it perfectly(or so I thought)...but it still doesn't connect.
(even though it shows that I'm getting a IP address on my Linux PC.)
Too weird. |

Think my Zyxel X550N is slowly dying.
Tried hooking up 2 other Zyxel routers, neither one would work.
So,I decided to order a new Rosewill RNX-N150RT router from Amazon.com. It was $18.99 with $3.99 1-day Prime shipping. ($22.98 total.) |

Hi,
If you want help, you need to answer the questions asked ... Orion asked for the results of "ifconfig"

said by pablo:Without the requested data, I can't be sure. The router dying may be true, but I think it's orthogonal. The fact that the OP doesn't even have an eth0 configured means even if the router were working properly, it wouldn't work. So I agree with you. The OP should provide sudo ifconfig -a output. Sounds like the ethernet card isn't being recognized or the kernel/module support isn't there. |

Not to drum the issue into the ground but when people ask for help, they need to provide the data requested.
At this point, I'm /less/ likely to help the OP.

Too weird. as root ifdown eth0 ifup eth0 that should work in ubuntu, but, i don't consider ubuntu, debian, so it might not, but, that paste we need |

Should run an ifconfig -a instead of ifconfig. ifconfig by itself will only list adapters with active ethernet activity.
ifconfig -a will list all ethernet devices, whether online or not. |

Is it possible, as a test, to connect the computer directly to the modem, and then reboot the modem, then the computer? That will take the router out of the loop. |
