Re: Samsung TV vulnerability could let a hacker change the ch.

That is not an acceptable fix. Then you just wasted your money on that TV.

not

No details posted on if this is network vulnerability or not. Most likely it is, meaning that the hacker would need access to this set from the network side (i.e probably the local network). If it's from outside of your firewall then the TV must be opening up some specific ports in UPnP that are leaving it vulnerable, but even so, there are a few layers to go through in terms of finding such offending systems.

This sounds like most security issues then on connected devices and the one issue that causes almost all infections already. User Error. While samsung should certainly patch this, there is something to be said when the route of infection has to be visiting a bad page which requires a user action.. I really do not see the point of a browser on a TV, Today people would get more function from their laptop and would not have to leave their show to google that one person they cannot identify in the movie of the week.

I have a low tech fix to the high tech problem of them accessing the camera.

Electrical tape over the lens of the camera. Problem fixed. Better yet tape a picture of a hairy old man in front of the camera. give them something to look at.

yeah then will get residue on it

Well, does your car at least turn into something else? Sometimes I turn it into a trashcan. Hmm...

But you are making an assumption that everyone has a laptop. Some of us don't care for pitiful, underpowered, under everything laptops. We purchase powerful desktops. So, for us, using the browser on the TV (assuming one bought one with a keyboard on the back of the remote or purchased the Samsung keyboard remote separately) makes sense.

Until you get one of the keyboard remotes and find TV internet browsing even more pitiful, underpowered, and under-everything compared to a phone or tablet which frequently have pages tailored for them...unlike the TV which lacks the tailored pages and/or plug-in compatibility that a laptop offers.

I believe FAR more people have laptops and/or smart phones, then smart TVs. Also, the vast majority of those who own smart TVs already own a laptop and/or smart phone. The number using a smart TV for browsing is miniscule. It's really a torturous, last resort way to browse the internet, even with a keyboard remote. It doesn't make sense for just about anybody.

I can print, email, send files to my PC, remote-in to work systems, edit Word/Excel files, and many other things from from my phones, tablet, and laptop. My 8000 series Samsung TV can't, it's even further underpowered than just about any phone, tablet, or laptop.

If it's important, back it up... twice. Even 99.999% availability isn't enough sometimes.

What little browsing I've done on the TV looked fine. I did come to this site and it looked fine, (on a 46" and no horizontal scroll bar) but without a remote with a qwerty keypad, I couldn't interact here without a lot of hassle. Since my computer monitor is only about two feet from my TV the whole thing is irrelevant except if I need wide screen (for watching youtube HD videos for instance) as my monitor is a 19" Dell ultrasharp 5:4 ratio. I think I may buy another one so I have two with the needed height as that would be better than a new widescreen monitor that has poor height and too much width as relative to the height. I wouldn't mind more width but I would want more height also. I probably will get a Dell 20" Ultrasharp for the height. (I'd prefer a TV with height and width about the same. I don't even like wide screen TVs...they cut off too much vertically. I am fine with cutting off the irrelevant periphery.

It all comes down to people asking for spaghetti and getting it.
Make sure being "connected" becomes the main standard, once that is done, we are free to FORCE them by taking away the option not to be connected.
