Quantumvoice Residential Services being Discontinued 3/1/13

As explained in the below email received today, residential Quantumvoice service is being discontinued as of March 1, 2013. I have been a happy customer of QV for many years, so this presents an unwelcome problem for which I could please use advice.

I have a primary and secondary number configured on my 250 minute account, each in different area codes, (one is mine, the other is provided by QV and my hope is they will release it to me). In addition to the QV-provided ATA, I use a couple of BYOD Linksys SPA phones, and an occasional soft-phone when on the road. All this for a monthly fee of $25.

Where can I go to get a similar combination of reliable service, hassle-free multiple number support, free BYOD device support, minimal taxes and fees, and a reasonable assurance that the company will be in business for the foreseeable future?

Thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions.

Important Service Notice
Quantumvoice Residential Services Discontinued

For Account:

This notice is to inform you that TelNet Worldwide will be discontinuing its Quantumvoice residential services on March 1, 2013. You are encouraged to take immediate action if you want to maintain your service.

We have appreciated your business over the years. While we will no longer be able to provide your residential services, if you are currently using Quantumvoice residential services for your home business, you may have an option to move to one of TelNet’s business plans. Please contact Tom Ray at 248.485.1037 to discuss available business plans that may fit your home office needs.

Please note that it is important that you choose another phone provider by January 15 to ensure service continuity. This will allow time for the new provider to switch or port your telephone number over to them prior to our service end date. If there are any issues with porting your Quantumvoice number to your new phone provider, please contact our customer care department.

If you have questions about this notice, you’ll find most answers in our online FAQs at www.telnetww.com/qv_resi/qv_resi_service_faq.html. If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to call customer care at 1.800.508.1254 during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 9a-5p ET).

Sincerely,

TelNet/Quantumvoice Service Team

I received the same email. I have two numbers with QV as well as a number for inbound fax via email. I would love it if they would grandfather existing residential accounts since the parent company will continue offering business services.

QuantumVoice was bought by DigitalRealm in 2006.

DigitalRealm was bought by TelNet in 2010.

-----------------------------------

This was probably inevitable as TelNet clearly was focused on business, but it's a shame for them to give up existing customers in good standing....

Also surprising that they did not try to sell their residential side [as Phone Power took over Broadvox Direct Residential a while back].

But QV has been a small player on the residential side....

It IS good that they are giving plenty of notice.

You may want to consider CallCentric. Very good folks.

You can have the 3 numbers on one account, and one of them can be routed to the CC inbound fax server.

Regarding the other two numbers, if you are good with having them ringing through to the same ATA or IP phone, that would be easy. However, if you need to hook up more than one ATA etc then you may want to look for a provider that has subaccounts.

Fortunately the Blue Spring rate center has lots of CLEC's so hopefully you will have a nice choice of providers....

If by "secondary" you mean that from [your] POV it's secondary then of course they will let you port. That's the law.

If by "secondary" you mean that it was some kind of special feature number, not a "real" number, then they might not be able to port. But that is quite rare in VoIP.

For your needs and configuration based on my experiences:

TelaSip.com [my primary, _long_ time provider of at least 7/8 years or so] or Future-Nine.com. For best results _CALL_ TelaSip (or email: gwillingham@telasip.com), tell them what you want, and let them tell you what they'll do for you. Grrreat! service and reliability for peanuts. Also VOIPo has been pretty darn good and reliable for me for residential accounts.

There are many other good providers... I just haven't used them all!

I've never heard of this company, but it's indeed weird that they're closing doors on existing customers, whilst still staying in business for business accounts.

Closing accounts for existing customers which have already passed all fraud checks, setup questions etc etc must be the dumbest business decision ever. I won't be surprised if the business customers are next.

At least they could have simply closed down new registrations, and scheduled gradual price increases, or would that be illegal due to some special regulation?

If I am remembering there are other companies that have gone to the business route only. Plus they have been bought out so the new company was centered on business accounts.

Agreed, but it's been done before.

Broadvox (not to be confused with Broadvoice) transferred all their residential accounts to PhonePower, as was said.

Packet8 (which changed its name to [8x8] thus doing an even stupider business decision) quite clearly decided to go down the business route, although continuing existing residential customers.

The money's on the business side....

No, I expected this a couple of years ago.

TelNet is very business-oriented, and QV was small and stale as a residential VoIP brand. Probably few residential QV users were left.

After TWO successive buyouts, the haimish nature of the original QV was rather diluted....

TelNet is licensed as a CLEC in Michigan and Ohio. They have many products and services, but all oriented [towards] business.

250 minute plan for $25/mo? or is that two Lite plans for $25 after taxes? Our Bare Essentials plan is very similar - 250 minutes out, 2000 minutes in, at $7/mo.

They still have the residential plans listed on their website.. might be a good idea to take them down or post a notice if they're not going to offer them anymore.

I stand corrected. The monthly invoice shows $19.99 for 1000 minutes nationwide, and $4.99 for the Friends and Family number. Monthly total is $24.98.

I have been reviewing the CC website based upon your recommendation. Do you know why they charge a separate monthly 911 fee for their inbound calling plans? Seems illogical to associate an emergency service with an inbound only situation? I'm not put off by the fee, just confused.

This has been discussed here at length.

The reason basically is that even if the customer has only signed up for an inbound service, the customer could add an outbound service at any time, literally in a matter of a few seconds online. And at that point it's clear that there is an interconnected service which is subject to 911 regs.

For the same reason, the Canadian CRTC told Link2Voip that THEY had to start requiring 911 even for DID-only service. That company closed down in March and at the time they publicly said on their website that that was one of the causes.

It's largely a moot point now anyway.

If you choose an outbound calling package, then CC does NOT charge a separate 911 fee for that account. It's included. (I know their website makes that a little unclear, but it's true).

Outbound plans include:
North America 500 at 6.95 (residential or business)
North America 1000 at 12.95 (residential or business)
North America Residential (for uncapped outbound residential) at 19.95

I also received the same unwelcome email as fbruno. I have had the 250 minute outgoing unlimited incoming plan for a number of years now which has worked perfectly for my needs. I am a BYOD customer with a Linksys PAP2 device.

An important feature to me is both incoming and outgoing CNAM which Quantumvoice provided. For many years it was nearly impossible to find a VoIP provider that would set up outgoing CNAM for you. Can someone recommend a new provider that has this service? If it matters the number I want to port is in the 231 area code in Michigan.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Bi-directional CNAM......

Possibly Flowroute, you'd have to ask them. Depends on your rate center.

Same with Voip.MS.

----------------------------

The IRONY is that I imagine you are in the Big Rapids rate center.

QuantumVoice actually is actually a full-blown CLEC in that rate center (listed as the parent Telnet Worldwide).

So they have 1,000 numbers with their own CLEC in your rate center, yet they tell you goodbye. I guess they think they will sign up 1,000 business lines in your small town....

It's stuff like that that makes me think that you don't have to be a genius, or even all that clever, to run a business. I mean, that's just plain stupid.

The funny thing is that QuantumVoice really got started as a sideline....

Quantumvoice started out as a spin-off of Advanced Media Services' phone service offering for their MDU (Multi-Dwelling Unit) customers who moved out of their apartments but wanted to take their phone service with them. In Q4 2006 Advanced Media Services decided they wanted to only focus on their MDU clients and thus not continue in the retail phone service market.

DigitalRealm was the underlying carrier so we agreed to take on the Quantumvoice subscribers and the Quantumvoice brand name.

Wonder if the QV name originated at the same time as the Quantum Leap TV series (1989-1993).

Looks like toll-free calls count against monthly minutes with CC for the 500 and 1000 minute residential plans. That would be a major downgrade from the QV plans. So far, this is the only hitch I can see.

I have started testing CC with the Free Phone Number plan on my SPA phone. Working flawlessly so far. Thanks for the recommendation.

You can call TF numbers for free on CallCentric by doing it through SipBroker.

They would be dialed as [**275*1800xxxxxxx] or the equivalent for 866/877/888 calls.

Notes:

1) Works fine for me.

2) Your dial plan must be configured to allow it.

3) On many phones such as Linksys the dial plan can even be configured to do it automatically. Something like this:
|<:**275*>1800xxxxxxx|<:**275*>1866xxxxxxx|<:**275*>1877xxxxxxx|<:**275*>1888xxxxxxx|

4) It does not work for 855 numbers.

Disappointing to see this, but not surprising. When I first investigated VoIP, QV had a compelling service offering and good pricing, but no way of porting my NC number. By the time porting my number became an option, I was well established elsewhere...

I have been a happy Voipo customer since (before) the beginning, starting as a beta tester, continuing on after full launch. They have a full suite of services including virtual numbers, and they support BYOD as a second device. We've had our primary number with them since CallVantage shut down, and I never get complaints from my wife about the @#^$!$#@!!! phone not working. I'm confident that they're in it for the long haul, but as they're a private company, there's limited information as to their financial health, etc.

CallCentric is definitely another solid option. I haven't logged as many minutes on their service as on Voipo, but one outcome of Sandy is that they posted a fair bit of information about their infrastructure, and it's nothing less than very impressive. Given their investment, interconnections, and corporate structure, it's unlikely (IMO) that they're going to fold any time soon.

My comments are not meant to detract from any other service offerings; I just haven't used them myself and therefore cannot comment. Best wishes with your search!
