 | Question(s) regarding Teksavvy, VPN and Copyright Infringmen Good Evening everyone,
I've searched around and I couldn't find a definitive answer.
How would a VPN protect someone that torrents? Or would it just make it a little more difficult to go after someone? Could Voltage or any other type of copyright troll go after someone that torrented a movie through a VPN?
Lets hypothetically say Voltage got an IP of someone seeding one of those quality movies on their list, and it belonged to a U.S. VPN server that belonged to Hidemyass, what can Voltage/Other copyright companies do about it?
Thanks,
Transistor |

| reply to transistor That's complicated depending on the VPN provider. For starters, some VPNs used shared IPs which means multiple people are using the same IP at the same time, and these providers also keep no logs. Even if they did keep IP logs (ones like Privateinternetaccess claim they do not keep any), they would have to court order the VPN before court ordering all of those people's ISPs in the hopes of finding one that has a log connected to that VPN Server IP at the right time. In fact they probably wouldn't have sufficient evidence to get a court order to go after the ISP then because it would be like "well, your honor, there is a 1 in 20 chance this guy is our perp.... Court order plz?" For a serious crime maybe... For downloading a crappy B movie? Not so much.
I hear hidemy@ss keeps some form of logs though. I would go with one who does not. |

 | so which VPN provider should one get? |

 | reply to kabes Yeah HMA does definately keep logs, but I mostly use it for US netflix and hulu.
Do you know how difficult it would be to do an International court order? |

 | reply to kabes After reading that article, I'm going to get a prepaid cc & do a 2 year stint with »www.privateinternetaccess.com. I like what I see from them. |

Sanek join:2006-08-10 Kanata, ON | I got an account with them few days ago because certain someone's youtube cache servers were slow as a snail during prime time
It's "OK" for the price. The speed to one of the two Canadian servers is decent - can never connect to the Toronto one though
Some of the servers are very slow for me (i.e. Florida), but it could be Teksavvy's routing.
I would recommend you to pay for a month (I used Paypal) and see if you like it. Extend it afterwards or find something else if you don't. |
|
 | One thing I love about HMA, on their Chicago, Scranton, and New York servers I pull between 15-18mbps, and In their UK ones I get between 5-7. |

1 edit | reply to transistor For even additional security you can use privateinternetaccess' SOCKS5 proxy in your torrent client on top of the VPN.
This isn't affecting speeds.

Also to be sure to use the VPN kill switch option if you're connecting via the app they provide. If you weren't using the killswitch the proxy is sort of back up protection.. |

| reply to transistor 1) Read that torrentfreak article.
2) DON'T go with a Canadian or U.S based VPN service. I would recommend Canadian providers only to those living outside Canada. Pick one based in the E.U (eastern countries prefferably) or Russia for maximum protection.
3) If you know your way around linux, the best way is to actually rent a linux VPS from a hosting provider and setup your own VPN server. That way, only you have access to your logs. -- www.613websites.com ● Budget Canadian Web Design and Hosting

 | reply to d4m1r Good to know, but hard to find a decent price/service for a VPS - also routing everything overseas is murder on the ping rates.
Everything I've read to date suggests BTGuard is a good solution, and that while lacking customer support they get the job done without logs and speed issues (just occasional drops which could expose your IP but that's a risk with any VPN) |

| BTguard is a Canadian service IIRC (so would avoid them as you are presumably located in Canada as well) and only applies to torrenting. Ping is only really important for voip and gaming and I don't use a VPN for either of those 2. Ping does not matter for what a VPN is intended for, browsing, torrenting, etc.
And a $5/month linux VPS would be more than sufficient to run a private OpenVPN server...

 | BTGuard has severs all over the world from what I've read, regardless, since they don't keep logs it doesn't matter where they're located.
$5/m VPS service, with the ability to handle 25/6mbps and isn't going to vanish suddenly? If you know of any, let me know.
Edit: oh and ping does affect everything you do. You'll lose about 15-20% of your speed, websites will become less responsive (esp those with a large number of HTTP requests), you won't be able to connect to as many people in the swarm due to timeouts, etc. Even going from Bhell to Teksavvy the ping rate difference was immediately noticeable by my fiance who is a non-techie. That was only ~200ms down to ~13ms |

| reply to transistor I recommend Private internet access and pay using bitcoins. They have port forwarding and also no logging either. www.privateinternetaccess.com
Also BTguard is absolute rubbish (speed sucks a$$, pings a super high) there are better options available. |
