[OS X] Lion server + Lion clients: WGM problems with preferences

Hello.
I have a 10.7.5 server and 10.7.5 clients.
I'm using WGM, not using Profile Manager.

I'm trying to preconfigure Safari: (home page, favorites, new tab as top sites).

I did it two ways and it did not work:
way #1
1. on server config Safari to my likings
2. copy com.apple.Safari.plist to desktop and from desktop import into WGM
3. copy Safari from the applications folder into WGM

way #2
1. on server config Safari to my likings
2. in WGM from /system/library/coreservices/ copy the managed client

-
way #1 - no changes
way #2 - I get these: item does not match the preference manifest

Re: [OS X] Lion server + Lion clients: WGM problems with prefere

I am only using 10.8 server now, which no longer includes WGM, so I can't live test this, but:

»support.apple.com/kb/HT3993 describes the steps to do things. It seems similar to, but different from, the two methods you tried.

When I follow the steps in the article,
and open the Safari (com.apple.Safari)
I see Once empty, Often empty, Always 54 items.

0^
Indicates that an item does not match the preference manifest.

Before I copied the Safari app info WGM I set the following:
- home page
- favorites toolbar
- new tab as top sites (which I have defined)

Any ideas?
This is driving me nuts.

Can you post a screenshot? (shift+command+4, then drag a box around what you want to capture--.pngs will be saved to the desktop)

I am not an expert, but I believe the error you are getting is because there is a flag set in the preferences file that is not part of the standard set in the manifest. I'm not sure what that would be because I don't have your preferences file or the standard manifest, but if you move your .plist file to the desktop and then relaunch Safari it will recreate one that should match the manifest. Did you use terminal to manually change some Safari settings?

Note that having preferences that don't match the manifest don't actually stop them from being sent out apparently. See »support.apple.com/kb/HT3933 for an example.

You can use WGM in 10.8 still - I have it on mine. It is the only vestige of the old OS X Server left.
