Re: Public Buses Adding Microphones to Record Passengers

said by ashrc4:

Suppose S.F. folks talk their battery out their phone when hopping on a bus?

Not sure that'd help in this case as the camera/mikes are built into the bus itself.

quote:
The systems use cables or WiFi to pair audio conversations with camera images in order to produce synchronous recordings. Audio and video can be monitored in real-time, but are also stored onboard in blackbox-like devices, generally for 30 days, for later retrieval.

You have NO expectation of privacy on a PUBLIC bus, you want privacy, take a cab or private car.

Twenty or thirty persons(or more) can listen to any conversations you may have, including one side of a cell phone conversation.

I have a lot of experience taking public transportation.

Cell phones don't capture everything that happens on public transportation.
SMTA has 80 routes. Some in operation 24 hours a day. That's more than 800 hours of video/audio a day. Normal speaking tone of 4+ simultaneous conversions plus outside noise being recorded at the same time in a bus results in little/none being comprehensible. Especially when there's a screaming child on the bus. If you think anyone or any machine has time to spy on anyone and track their activity by reviewing this video/audio when a tragic event hasn't happened you're beyond paranoid. Recording the audio of a screaming looney or someone in need of help is not an invasion of privacy.
Have you ridden on public transportation after 7 PM? Have you been on a bus with a guy across the aisle who's eyes that are bouncing back and forth 100 times a second while he's picking his fingernails with an 8 inch knife? I have and I welcome video and audio recording in public in that situation.

It's the principle you say? Then I ask you what's more valuable - your safety and the safety of loved ones or the privacy of conversation with another person when you're in a PUBLIC location? Considering the insanity that has become so commonplace in the USA, and reduced budgets for police to protect everyone, having audio/video that can be used to review to find crazy loons is priceless.

For those that think those planning doing something illegal or questionable wouldn't talk about it on a bus need to research IN PLAIN SIGHT, not the TV program, but the same theory applies.
