Poor down/up rate...
by eggonlea » Sat Dec 15, 2012 9:26 pm

I just installed the sonic.net internet two days ago. Today I found the network speed was unbelievable slow.

Could anybody help me take a look?

BTW, I tried to power it off and on but nothing becomes better.

I once got at least 6M/1M two days ago. And I didn't touch anything especially the wires...

Called the support hotline. It gets a little better now - 1.6mbps/600kbps. Still much slower than before. But at least it doesn't drop again and again. Let me try to use it and see what would happen.

I have a friend who tried the AT&T 6.0Mbs service (their legacy ADSL), and showed a very low SNR (below 6.0 dB) on a line with excellent attenuation. In her case it turned out to be premises wiring; she cleaned it up, and got appropriate SNR and the full 6016/768 modem rates for Elite.

I support a relative with Fusion whose line gets ~5800/500 sync with SNR=6.0 dB, attenuation 51.5 dB, so your connection should be better. If you can test at the NID, you would know if it is the premises wiring, or in the plant, most likely between the NID and the SAI (Serving Area Interface), aka, "cross connect". I have seen DSL trouble (accompanied by voice line trouble) fixed by repairs to the F2 span between the NID and SAI.

Thanks for sharing the experience! Sonic technician will come to take a look on Tuesday. Hope he can figure out the root cause.

Your attenuation is very high. Either you are on a very long loop or there is a wiring problem. The download speed of 1.5Mbps would be appropriate for a long loop with such high attenuation. However the upload speed is ridiculously low (well below what is normal for such a loop length).

Confirming the likelihood of bad wiring is the message:

"Uncanceled Echo: 17.7 dB Suspicious - check phone filters and alarm"

This means that a lot of the transmitted DSL signal is being reflected back to the modem (and this means that transmit power is lost before it got anywhere near the CO).

I would strongly suggest to do some testing at the NID because those statistics point at bad inside wiring as the most likely cause. Chances are an external POTS splitter and a dedicated twisted pair cable to the modem will clear up the reflected signal (echo).

Re: Poor down/up rate... [Update: Solved]

The engineer found the connection at AT&T MPOE is rotted and rusty. He cleaned up all of them (outside and inside) and now the speed is back t 7Mbps/1.xMbps. Hope the rainy days won't impact it again.

Sonic.net made a good job for their quick response and effective action!
