QuantumXI Know You're Here join:2000-11-16 Thunder Bay, ON | [WIN8] Executing Windows apps? When I try to execute apps such as Store and News all I get is the app start screen with the busy spinner running. Nothing ever completes. I get the same result on the 2 computers I've installed Win 8. Am I missing something? besides the boat........ -- The Microsoft Vacuum Cleaner!! The only MS product that doesn't suck. |

Sometimes the machine will ask a bunch of security related questions before actually enabling internet access. Usually when you connect the LAN cable and/or when you open a browser. |

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | reply to QuantumX I had the same experience. My internet function is fine. I just couldn't get any of the apps to work on a new computer with Win 8. That was ok with me. I uninstalled all of them except the Microsoft Store that evidently you cannot uninstall but that never connects. I read that you did not have to allow Microsoft to spy on your every move in order to be able to look at the contents of the store (but only if you wanted to purchase from the store). But I could never connect to the store and can't uninstall that app. I knew I could not stand the insult from Microsoft that I am only three years old (the cartoonish images for each of those apps). -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. I can't get Windows Help Online to load. Is that because I am running as Admin? How ridiculous if that is the reason it never loads. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

I guess MS thinks if you disable the NAG you don't need Metro or help.

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 | I didn't turn it off. I run as Admin and it is quite unobtrusive (to my surprise). It stll will popup a warning when I am about to install a new program but it is one click to tell it I do want to install the program. I suppose it may irritate me if I decide to create and use a user account once I have Win 8 with most of the programs I want installed on it. But I recall how in your face UAC was on Vista even if you were running as Admin so this is pretty mild and reminds me a bit of Process Guard.
Maybe I just have a bad connection to Microsoft for Windows Help...ping is ok to Microsoft.
(OT- I am struck yet again by how superior the picture is on the same monitor on XP Pro as compared to Windows 8. (I'm back on the XP computer....haven't been for a week as I only have one monitor so a bit of hassle switching. nVidia cards on both). Plus, my little $10 Wal-Mart Logitech mouse is so much smoother, easier gliding than the more expensive Dell laser mouse that came with the Win 8 computer. I was really struck by the differences tonight. So nice to be able to absent mindedly move my mouse all about...no ugly black clock, etc pops up and I can actually see the left vertical scroll bar for my vertical tabs on Fx ---nice blue-green color...can't see the extremely pale gray color on extremely pale gray background on Win 8 that I cannot change....there is just so much so bad about Win 8). -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. | I have no problem with those apps and my UAC has been turned off from the beginning. I don't see how it can be related to UAC. I do know that although I run a different firewall, several of my apps won't update until I enable Windows firewall. That wouldn't have anything to do with it would it? |

QuantumXI Know You're Here join:2000-11-16 Thunder Bay, ON | Interesting idea. I disabled my KIS Firewall and turned on the Windows Firewall. After a reboot, just to be sure, Metro apps still do not function. -- The Microsoft Vacuum Cleaner!! The only MS product that doesn't suck. |

| A lot of good info there, but now I'm wondering why I have no problems with my apps and all I did was turn off UAC without doing any editing of the registry. Thanks for pointing me to the Windows 8 area over there. I've been a member there for a long time but only for the Android side of things. |

Since I didn't change my UAC settings from the default it's not relative to my issue unfortunately. Seems to be lots that have this issue tho....... -- The Microsoft Vacuum Cleaner!! The only MS product that doesn't suck. |
