[IA] 2 modems randomly restart

About a month or so ago, I noticed that our internet connection was randomly disconnecting. Eventually, I looked and noticed that the modem was randomly restarting and after about 2-4 minutes, connection would be restored. The disconnects were random and few in between, maybe 1-2 times an evening? In the past 2 weeks, its become more of about 5-8 times a night, sometimes multiple times in about 30 minutes. Called Mediacom on Wed. night (12-12) and scheduled an appointment for Thursday evening, but for some reason it had gotten cancelled. So I called again and scheduled for Saturday (12-15). A friend of mine linked me a program to ping different sites to see how often the connection issues were happening and I've been running that pretty non-stop. Friday night through Saturday morning had only about 2 disconnects in about 12 hours, but in about 3 hours Saturday morning had maybe 10 disconnects, all completely random.

2 techs must of been in the area because both of them ended up coming over and noticed I wasn't getting the signal strength that I should of been and corrected it. Well our connection worked fine for about 5 minutes before disconnecting again (modem rebooted). Got the same 2 techs back and they suggested that it was a bad modem since nothing looked like it was wrong with the line. Swapped out the modem and it worked for about 2 hours before randomly restarting. Called once again and a tech is suppose to be coming out on Monday (12-17).

This morning while running the Internet connectivity program, We had about 20 disconnects, each lasting about 5 minutes in 2 hours. That's roughly about 20 minutes of actual up time. Called Mediacom once more to find out if there was anything happening they could see at their end, but they couldn't see anything nor were they able to get a tech out to visit us today. After having this connection issue happening for about another hour it seems to have calmed down, and in the past 4 hours, only 2 disconnects that I am able to see.

We have tried swapping out modems, cables, and spliters and none of those seems to have solved the issue. Has anyone else experienced this or perhaps might have a better clue at whats going on?

Im using the Motorola Surfboard modem SB5101U (both of them are). As for the logs, they dont look like that at all because im using a program called Internet Connectivity Monitor 1.2 that will ping both Yahoo and Google. Basically, it'll tell me if the site was reached or not.

similar issues here in Illinois......even got Motorola to replace my modem...mediacom cannot figure it out

The 2 modems you tried are not DOCSIS 3 modems. There is an issue with some DOCSIS 2 modems switching channels frequently in some DOCSIS 3 areas.

I've been told it's unlikely Mediacom will issue me one since I don't have the higher speed tiers that generally warrant it. Is this accurate?

I have been working with Mediacom for over 2 months for this very same issue....I am however using a DOCSIS 3 modem.....they were convinced my SB6120 was defective.....so I got Motorola to replace it under warranty.....now i am using a SB6121......still same issues....and no one can figure it out......also same issues at one of our fire stations across town.....Mediacom Chad has been very helpful.....but there is only so much they can do....I belive it is a system issue of some sort

In Prior Lake, MN. Problem has been terrible for me for 3 months. Started happening about a 16 months ago. I had a rented modem. Started occurring when I hooked up a Sprint Airvama (signal booster that is connected to data modem). I disconnected the Airvana and reconnected. Worked for many months no issues. However, I did not have a wireless router in which several things were pulling data.
Got a new modem, new router, smart phones, iPad, laptop, and wireless printer now. We stream Fantasy Football, hulu, and Pandora. I work from home where I connect through VPN to a secured network.
I started having issues 2 months ago to the point where I disconnected everything. It was great for several days and just started occurring again one evening. It occurred consistently for several days between 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. central. I disconnected the Airvana and all appeared to be working fine until this weekend. I was working remote and was streaming Fantasy Football and it started restarting again. I turned off one of my laptops. The problem still occurred. I disconnected the Blu Ray, still occurred. I turned off wifi from phones and iPads, still occurred. Went to Best Buy and they said it might be power problems with the modem. Very frustratingIng.

All in all, I had everything disconnected at one time and still occurred but after calling Mediacom to reset my modem, the modem stayed active until the next fit.

I am convinced that it has to do with Mediacoms inability to send and receive data at certain times of the day causing modems to fail and there is some kind of cache of data in the modem that needs to be cleared for it to work until the next time the problem is initiated. But that is a hypothesis.

How do I access the log from 12/15? It only shows current date and time range?

One thing I've been noticing since I posted in this particular thread is that this always seems to happen between 10 p.m. and midnight Central. Is there something specific going on in Mediacom's system in the Urbandale during this period of time?

Edit: Happened again like clockwork tonight (12/19), right around 10:26. The two nights previous were all within 10 minutes of that time-frame.
