XP is getting too old.

The OS on this computer is Windows 7 64bit. I keep stressing the XP rootsupd. (Win32 cabinet extractor) because I installed that version out of desperation and feel that I broke the roots update certificate mechanism in the process.

In view of what I did, does what you said still stand that seeing https and a lock indicates that the connection is secure?

BTW, the MS fix I linked to in my first post seems like it will fix this problem, but it says it is for server 2008, and I don't understand the instructions fully.

aguen posted : As longs as the URL/Address bar still indicated an HTTPS connection in addition to something akin to a padlock icon/picture, your connection was/is secure end to end. If you were actually missing a suitable SSL cert. for that banking site, it should have prompted for it to be downloaded once your login credentials were authenticated.

Also, I strongly suggest that you upgrade your OS to Win 7. (Not 8)

XP is getting too old.

I'm just concerned that if the root certificates on this computer is broken when we are at a https site it may not actually be secure.

What browser was being used at the time?
Check that browsers Encryption setting(s) and ensure that SSL 3.0 is selected.

bluepoint posted : Have you tried installing the correct W7 root certificates? You can download it from the MS Update Catalog. If this will be your first time to go to MUC, it will ask you to install the active-x, allow it, then do a search of KB931125. Download the appropriate certs for W7, unzip it then manualy install the root certs by running the executable(exe).

I have an important question. I was reading about System Restore and it mentioned the SYSTEM RESTORE API. I remember Security Update KB278354 was released and among its problems it caused a problem with API. MS reissued this update around December 21.

Since I installed the XPsp3 rootsupd.exe cabinet file would the non-working API cause System Restore not to correct this problem?

I have restore points prior to installing the XP file and the re-issued KB278354 installed . Could using another restore point possibly help?

I need advice. Thank you.

I may be wrong but I think this is saying my computer isn't taking those certificate updates. Or is it saying something else?

(Before installing the XPsp3 rootupd.exe I made a restore point. Afterwards I rebooted the computer and used the restore point. I thought System Restore restores system files - I think I caused this problem and thought System Restore would protect me.)

Thank you auggy. I downloaded the System Readiness Tool. It took about 25 minutes to run and then said "installation complete". I checked the installed updates area and it showed the hotfix was successful.

Should that fix anything to do with CAPI2?

So I will received a message from the browser about the certificate if there is a problem with the site? That's good to know.

EDIT: I just installed two windows updates and that System Readiness Tool did wonders! It had been painfully slow to install an update recently - now it downloaded and installed immediately and when I rebooted it took 43 seconds to boot up instead of the 92 seconds I was getting after installing the wrong updates.

I now notice that prior to installing the XP file there was one successful auto update by the CAPI2 source which occurred 12/8/12 - now I only have the Error ID 257 which I copied in my first post. One of my other computers got a whole bunch of the CAPI2 updates yesterday.

Thank you for looking at this. I didn't create this problem with Windows Updates - since I wasn't offered the roots cert update I tried to find it myself and caused this.

Is it unsafe at this time to use a credit card or visit credit card accounts on this computer?

auggy posted : Can you open the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log and see what error codes are being logged?

The bottom 1/3 of the log or last 30 to 50 entries usually give the applicable error code(s).

Thanks for looking at this. the two updates I tried to install were KB1607712 and KB2616676 and they were for Windows 7. The one I installed for XPsp3 was the KB931125 - that was the only one MS offered so I tried to install it. Even though I made a restore point and did use the restore point, I'm afraid I may have broken my roots certificate update based on that CAP12 error message.

I got that article from the online event viewer help. I have no idea of why, but I have noticed some events for Windows 7 are listed on Microsoft as for Server 2008.

I hope someone knows about this too. ;)

I was concerned because this Win7 64 bit computer didn't get the latest optional root certificates update. I attempted to install two previous roots cert. updates which Windows said didn't apply to my computer. So I did a system restore and d/l and installed a rootsupd.exe (a Win32 cabinet extractor) for XPsp3. I got no confirmation about it, but eventually rebooted my computer (probably a mistake) and then I ran the system restore. The computer seemed okay but I just found the above CAP12 error and 3 ESENT errors. I think from these errors and a MS info on the error my root certificate update isn't working.

Here are the errors, followed by the MS Fix address.

How bad is this? If I have to do that fix, I don't understand how I will see if it is corrupted and if it is, it says to empty the file, leave it open and rebuild it. I have no idea how to do that in a command prompt. Also, I don't think it does, but does copy and paste work in a command prompt?

I'd appreciate any help and I'm hoping maybe the computer can fix itself.
