Re: Canada Customs and special deal for 5 cases of beer?

said by Gone:

Not on a day trip or part of a 24 hour exemption. There is no alcohol exemption until you're out of the country for at least 48 hours. The total exemption at 48 hours 1.5L of wine, 1.14L of hard liquor or 8.5L of beer. This is a combined amount, not each.

If you're waved through with alcohol on a day trip, they're doing it because they're in a good mood, not because it's required. To quote my wife, if they do that "you're damn lucky and better say thank you to the officer."

My sister-in-law shops across the border 5-6 times a month and
brings back a bottle of wine every time. She has yet to be asked to
pay duty on it. We all know what the "book" says but they rarely
seem to bother with the dollar value or the wine/beer.

I think it comes down to having an officer inside do all the paperwork
on a $9.89 bottle of wine.

She is right up front with them about the wine and has it there to
show them. They seem to appreciate it. I know when I come back
from the mail drop I have paperwork and the items in the passenger
seat for them to see.

Exactly, and it is for that same reason that you probably won't be sent in for anything less than $100 because it's not worth it to send you in to pay no more than $13 worth of HST...

... but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. People have been sent in for $15, a whopping $1.95 in revenue for the government!

The lowest amount I was sent in for was $35. The highest I was able to get by without paying was $350 or so... I bought a new jacket and decided to pass through just before the evening shift change, lucked out and hit a young dude who let me head through unhindered.
