I agree. It's hugely significant. An appeal will most certainly be granted and those damages amounts will absolutely change.

I kind of take my above comments back. It's only a first office action and first rejection. So it's not a big deal yet and maybe of questionable value to Samsung at this point.
That being said, Apple is in a bit of a jam. If they make changes to the claims, then in most cases all past damages evaporate and Samsung is only liable for damages going forward on products that read on the amended Apple claims.
If Apple doesn't amend the claims, they risk the patent becoming finally rejected and the claims being held invalid.
