Registered Sex Offenders booted from Online Gaming Platforms

said by FoxNews.com/tech :

The news builds on an announcement made by the attorney general earlier this year, in which more than 3,500 registered offenders were kicked off networks run by Microsoft, Apple, Blizzard Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Disney Interactive Media Group, Warner Brothers and Sony.

Many online video game platforms allow users to access the Internet and send messages to other players anonymously -- and parents rarely realize just who kids are in contact with. According to the Pew Research Center, 97 percent of teens ages 12-17 play computer, web, portable, or console games and 27 percent of them play with people they don’t know.

“This is a groundbreaking effort that keeps the online community safer for our children,” said Laura A. Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law and the Crime Victims Center. “[It] sends a strong message that sexual predators can’t hide behind anonymous profiles online to prey on victims anymore.”

That's good news. While I don't think it's nearly as big a message as Laura thinks it is... it's a good start.

I've always had a problem with that term, because it's so far reaching. Get busted paying a hooker for sex, you are a sex offender,
Get busted peeing in an ally, you could be a sex offender depending on where you live.
Get busted having a quickie with your partner, again depending on where it was, where you live, you could be a sex offender.

None of the above involves minors. But yet they can get you banned from such services as well.

Or are the sex offenders they are talking about pedophiles, and they are just using the common PC name?

But ya, it's a good start to "protecting the kids"m though IMO if the parents are doing their jon in teaching the kids, the kids would be safer then a "sweep" by businesses.

How 'bout the 18yo who bangs his 17yo gf and gets nailed to the wall by her parents for statutory rape? Now he's a sex offender, 19yo and married to his now 18yo wife...

Or minors of any age "sexting" each other--storing and transmitting child pornography.

The system needs work, but for now we have to depend on prosecutors sensibly interpreting the law--unfortunately, lawyers and sense rarely go together.

From the perspective of protecting minors from predators, there is nothing wrong with the Registered Sex Offenders list. You don't get put on the list by accident. Some have through negligence. Should there be a way to contest or petition to have your name removed? Sure. I don't know if such a provision exists.

Yes, parents need to do their job, and businesses need to also do the right thing. It's not an "either/or" dilemma.

From a business perspective, is it worth taking on the liability that a Registered Sex Offender might exploit your product to hurt others? Nope. Especially not at .0003% of subscriptions.

I agree, but at t he same time, there have been a few threads, about the sex play that occurs in WOW.
If Blizzard is going to remove predators, you'd think they'd also remove the positions that allow the sex play to happen. After all, gotta protect the kiddies and the cash flow.

My kids used to play the free games like wizard 101 and adventure quest, those games are advertised a lot on networks/programming kids watch. I've often wondered how many of the avatars in those games were controlled by "pervie" adults trying to play with kids.
WOW isn't marketed towards kids, but it does have "eye" candy that attracts them. The pets, the mounts, the in game items. My kids have been playing since they were 8 or 9 years old. They are 14 now and never had an incident of a perv trying to pick them up/message them.
I play WOW as well, but they are off doing their own thing, and seldom do we team up.
Though they were giggling yesterday at a "perv" who was running around Goldshire screaming "sex" and watching him trying to mount various things.
My kids named that "perv" after our male dog, who is always humping our other dog [he is fixed and near 10/11 years old. The other dog is fixed as well].
But that so far was the extent of their exposure to sex in wow. The guy vanished after about doing that for 5 minutes. Could be he logged off or a GM kicked him.

I've always felt suspicious about the qualifications if being a sex offender.

I think this needs to be restricted to pedophiles.

Hell, i dated a sophomore when i was a senior. Of course, this is Montana so.... It was nothing out of the ordinary.

I got a minor pregnant when I was an adult. Is that illegal?

I think that is accepted in most states as you are still in school. Now if you had graduated and was sating a sophmore/dropped out, then you maybe guilty of a crime.
I recall one person saying it's interesting how having sex with a 17 year old a day before they turn 18 can get you jailed. But wait one day, and you are in the clear.

And I agree with what you are saying about restricted to pedophiles.

Either way, I think it's a good step.

They should do the same for anyone in similar situations.

DUI? No TV.
Probation? No internet.

Just my thoughts. No more vacations while in trouble!

It also depends on the state you're in. Sometimes the age difference as well. What's not okay in Arizona may be okay in Alaska.

This is entirely incorrect. The law isn't based upon whether or not you're in school. It is based upon the age gap between you and the other individual. Each state has an age range, averaging 2-4 years. In PA, for example, I think it is 2 years. School status is irrelevant.

Age of consent in Alaska is 16yo. There are a few caveats, the most obvious being that the adult can't be in a a position of authority over the juvenile. But for the most part a 50yo perv can have sex with a 16yo and it's perfectly legal. Weird.

Most states actually do require parental consent. As stupid as that sounds. In Texas it's two years. If the parents ok the relationship between someone older, that is perfectly fine. But when it comes to sexual relationships, if the parents find out, they can press charges. I've seen a 16 year old marry a 36 year old. The parents legitimately signed off on the marriage.

I know from personal experience that at least for PA, if you are under the age of 18 you have to have parental consent and signature to obtain a marriage license.

Sadly, many tend to believe it does. My 38yo cougar coworker married a 23yo guy and you wouldn't believe the crap she's taken for it. It's been really tough on her. People calling her "cougar" and the like...

If the grand total number of sex offenders dropped from the game is only 3500 (a tiny number on a national scale) then I believe they have reserved this act to only the most heinous of sex offenders- most likely the "probable" repeat offenders of pedophilia.

Its such a gray area. I have a buddy (like I've seen from some previous posts) who was 18yo with a 16 yo girlfriend (they were even in the same class- she is smart and he is dumb-lol) Her parents found out, pressed charges and he has been a convicted sex offender ever since and it has tragically affected his life to the negative.

He's married to her now (has been for 22 years) and has packed up and moved away as far as possible from everyone who loved him and her in an effort to escape the stigma. Her parents have not ever seen thier grand children and have seen her twice in a decade. Petty, jealous or overprotective parents have absolutely ruined the lives (or negatively affected them is a major way) of an entire family.

I always make a point of when I see them to shake my head and make sure they see it- and that I'm STILL pissed they were responsible for two very good friends being mostly removed from my life forever.

Sadness, indeed.
