[Parts Check] nvidia and ati card in the same box

Can it be done? Reason I'm asking is I'd like to add a cheap ATI card and do some Bit Coin mining, I'm looking at keeping my GTX670 for gaming.

If it can't be done then the other option is to sell the GTX 670 and get a baddass ATI card.

I'd rather keep the Nvidia card though because I'm used to it, and I know it plays well with Linux.

Feel free to share your thoughts as always.

I've been able to mix brands of video cards even back in Win 95. If your running them separate it will be no problem.

I have a Radeon HD 7770 and a GeForce 7300 LE in the same box. The LE powers a third monitor (at least until I can get an Active DisplayPort adapter, after which time I can run all three screens off the 7770).

So far I have had no major issues and games work perfectly fine. A few times I have had a couple of oddities where Windows will stop detecting the monitors attached to the 7770 and I'll have to go into display properties and reactivate them -- always seems to be when the machine first boots up. For all I know, that's a Catalyst driver issue and has nothing to do with the nVidia card (this is my first ATI/AMD card since a 9800 Pro in 2003, and back then the Catalyst drivers were crap). Other than that, it seems the two cards can coexist without issues.

Edit: You mentioned Linux. I don't know from experience, but I have heard that it can be trickier to get these two cards to play well together on that side of the fence. YMMV.

Good to know, I'll do some extra poking around regarding that.

can both cards be used in the machine at the same time. Yes;
however in the presence of an ati video card nvidia cards disable some features like PhysX... and you won't be able to use Vista as only XP and W7 allow you to run two different VGA drivers.

Wow, I had no idea. They removed an XP feature from Vista and then put it back in Win7?

I'd also like to add that it works on Windows 8 as well, since that's what I'm running.

I have been thinking the same thing. I have a AMD HD6850 in my rig running eyefinity and want to my old 7900gtx and run my extra two monitors off of it. 5 monitor setup would be sweet.

From the reading I've been doing, it's a tough slog, the recommendation so far is that they ATI card be primary.

Why not two 6850s in Crossfire?

Although OT to my topic, what's a good value card on the ATI side?

I've only had it a week, but so far I'm finding the XFX Ultra Overclocked Edition Radeon HD 7770 to be a very good-performing value card in the midrange segment. It's about $150 or so. I'm not playing anything super high end, but it's happily eaten everything I've thrown at it including Crysis (the original) and Diablo III, only ramping up its fan to barely-audible levels during the former and not at all during the latter.

I haven't tried Skyrim but have been meaning to just for giggles. But my old 3 GHz Core 2 Duo would probably make for a bad test as I always heard Skyrim is very CPU sensitive.

for 1080p, probably a 7870 to drive everything under ultra with perhaps light-to-moderate FSAA/post-processing.

My 7970 drives everything under ultra settings (w/max FSAA/uber-sampling)@ 30-45 FPS at 1440p while driving a secondary 1050p monitor. I'd like to add a second one at some point.

That's pretty solid.

I was looking at it for bit coin mining, and it performs well there too.

Got a system over here with an active intel gpu, and nvidia gpu on different monitors. I did encounter a weird effect when I installed the latest nvidia drivers, the screens went black, including the one on the other gpu, and they never came back at all. I let the hdd stop for a while, and pressed the power button to make it shutdown. After it came back up it showed they were installed possibly waiting for a restart, otherwise finished, but it seems like nvidias refresh method was the problem.

Ubuntu didn't fare as well as windows with multiple monitors on different cards, changing the resolution caused it to freeze, and even worse I couldn't change the resolution higher than garbage after installing the proprietary nvidia drivers.

Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Seeing as this is going to be specifically a bit coin miner, I have a couple of PC carcasses that could easily support a standalone ATI card (even something up to a 7870) so I may just resurect one of those and make into an ATI driven miner or something like that.
