Port blocking?

So a friend spends summers in Maine and gets DSL from [guess who...]

He was unable to send email to his university account port 465. I was not consulted, but Fairpoint support convinced him he had to use THEIR server, port 25. And they don't even offer TSL/SSL.

Does anyone know for sure if Fairport blocking outgoing 465/585/587/etc?

I don't think TSL/SSL offers end-to-end security; it is just for the client-to-server connection for the message submission.

I can't address whether Fairpoint is blocking message submission ports. Having a copy of the send error would help.

Perhaps you could post the host name of Uni message submission server. Then a tech-savvy FP user could attempt to Telnet in to port 465.

TLS/SSL offers you security from sniffing between the MUA and the MTA. Since that traffic includes your login & passwords, it's a good idea.

I know I can/do telnet to 465 from here, well away from Fairpoint. This is no problem while on sensible providers.

The question is: what will Fairpoint let through? And not being there, I can not test that. Hence my query here.

And, again, without the Message Submission Server host name, how can anybody test Fairpoint policy?

By testing to ANY site with mail ports there; save those within Fairpoint's walls, of course. Fairpoint's blocking is not to one site, but via some ports.

Or I'm pretty sure that that the M-lab test suite include a list of blocked ports. (»measurementlab.net)

But the problem is with a specific server. The ideal test would include that server, as well as others.
