andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | Need better video card? I currently have a Dell XPS 410 (Q6600, Win7-32bit, 4G, nVidia 8600GTS). This is with iTunes 10.7 (I'm waiting for the bugs to be fixed in iTunes 11) and Quicktime 7.7.3. Video resolution is 1920x1080.
I subscribe to Discovery News on iTunes video blogs. Lately, they restarted up, but have higher-resolution videos. Some do not work properly and the video is almost useless. In iTunes, these show with a bitrate of 94kbps or so and are 1280x720. Those with a higher bitrate (120-150, and even 245) work fine. Most are lower 640x360, but one ("Looking for a Few Good Samaritans") is 245kbps and 1280x720, and works fine.
I assume the problem ones may be using a codec version that the card does not support in hardware? I do notice it can take 5-10 seconds for the 'bad' videos to start. The others start up almost instantly. I wonder if there is some software interpretation going on. CPU load can briefly spike to 100%, then drop, then jump again on the bad ones. On good ones, it's usually steady at some low rate. On the bad ones, it doesn't make much difference what size I make the window.
It's probably time to update the card. The computer itself is fine, and I do not do any gaming. Any decent card suggestions with good video support that the computer will support? |

Does not over task your power supply, 300W vs the aged 375W power supply in your computer. Provides Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec) of 13.0 vs. your 10.8. A 20% improvement.

If you want a new video card, that's fine. Just don't expect hardware to fix a software/driver/codec issue. -- Google is your Friend |

andyrossPremium,MVM join:2003-05-04 Schaumburg, IL | reply to andyross OK. I did some experimenting, and it's something with iTunes causing interference or other CPU load. If I play the 'problem' videos directly in the Quicktime player, they are fine, although CPU load is around 25-30% instead of the 5-10% of others. |
