jh20001 posted : Not *so* true. Some servers, yes are horribly throttled for the same reasons ISPs do it (profit). However, anyone running off a fancy backbone (like most major corporations....Microsoft for one) can serve your information as fast as they want. I have picked up some wonderful speeds from MS, Amazon-hosted projects and the sort (some much higher than what we have today). I have one server I maintain for a mid-size company that is throttled at 25mbit/s per unique connection. There is plenty of room to increase that if needed but for the content in which the server is providing customers, it isn't necessary. If a company with control over such has any lower it's only a balance between total available bandwidth and how much traffic it can handle before it bottlenecks and causes problems.

There are a LOT of websites hosted with companies like Hostgator and BlueHost, and although their speed and features are great, they don't allow you to host sites that consume a LOT of bandwidth (ie major media-based sites, social networks and the sort). They do that by throttling your bandwidth to around 3-9mbps per unique visitor. For them though it's the cost vs benefits that win (they are much much more affordable than hosts that do provide what it needs for such).

Plus, the speed increase is for many many a reasons. Your connection isn't built upon the idea that you are using to it connect to "one" website at a time. My entire house is connected....from sensory to cameras to therms to tvs to bluray players to receivers to tablet to pcs to laptops to phones to video communication devices to gaming systems to to to to to to to to to to. So although one website doesn't give you much a benefit, the ability to connect everything you know to the internet...is. Soon we will have glasses and watches that interact with our networks and online. Hell, my smoke detectors are connected :)

--
This is my sig!

jh20001 posted : Well, we can pretty much all agreed that back in 2011 we were all getting much faster speeds due to "boost" than we are today with the new upgrades (+ boost). For premier, with boost, we are all getting around 60 something mbps with and avg speed drop down to about 40. Going back to 2011, we boosted as far as 90-140mbps...given we dropped to 20 after boost. So two years ago we had better bursts than we have today as it's only been capped since then, showing how well they specialize at taking a lot and giving back just a little and calling it an upgrade. I feel like they are assume the general public have the brain power of a small child.

Because of this, starting this year I have been lobbying companies to increase their interest in expanding to the Las Vegas community to offer faster service at a better price. I've been getting mixed results, but within those mixed exist major companies with a lot of features who do show interest in competing. So we need more people to rise up and write, call and email these companies (first researching online the proper names to contact to avoid the chain of communication chaos) so that they know Vegas welcomes the idea of a fair competitive system.

jh20001 posted : This is proof that Cox is full of crap. I forgot to post this earlier. This is a run I did on speedtest.net back in 2011 at my old place. Cox didn't have as much "cap" control on it's "boost" so boost would shoot it up to 98mbps and after about 20 seconds or so come crashing down to 20. Now *THAT*....was boost. 20-98...now we get 50-60. Should be 50-150 with boost now :/

[att=1]

Let's go picket in front of their corp office

Edit: I just did another speedtest and it showed 3.29mbps for upstream...compared to this morning that showed 19mbps. I did it again and my downstream crashed from 50 to 19mbps and upstream is 1.66mbps.....you have to be kidding.
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

bbz_Ghost posted : I think I've got you all beat... ;)

I started being "online" around 1977 or so using what was the Dow Jones News and Information Retrieval Service (what a mouthful that was) at a lowly pithy "oh god I can type 10x faster than this" 50 baud - it was so slow that more often than not my typing would cause a buffer overflow since the machine I was on just couldn't handle more than about 16 characters a second.

I finally did get a 300 baud modem in either late 1978 or early 1979, damned thing cost me like $1300 (a whole summer of grass cutting/yardwork savings) and my Dad thought I was freakin' insane for doing it but, as an electrical engineer himself, he understood (even in the 1970s) where technology was headed and he never put the brakes on my learning, thankfully.

Around the time the Commodore 64 appeared (I never owned a VIC-20, actually) I got one and the original C64 300 baud modem for it and was using VIDTEX and was delighted to make a pretty wicked discovery in early 1983: there were some PEEK and POKE commands you could use (mainly POKE to change registers) that one could issue that "overclocked" the 300 baud modem - I'm not joking, I'm totally serious here - to a whopping 450 baud which was a full 50% increase in speed in both directions, and it actually worked surprisingly well.

And the biggest benefit? In those days you paid by the minute to be connected: 300 baud connections were $.10 a minute ($6 an hour) and if you were extremely wealthy and had a 1200 baud modem (I thought my 300 baud from 1979 was expensive, geez, the 1200's were selling for nearly $2500 from USRobotics and Hayes), so it was rather awesome to discover that CompuServe's modems that I was dialing into were picking me up at the faster 450 baud speed but they were recognizing me as 300 baud... :)

And as tough as it might be to believe, that 50% "speed boost" actually was incredibly noticeable: instead of a line of text appearing onscreen as the cursor moved across letter by letter, the entire line would just sort of "blink" into view, full lines at a time. I was the only person in the US - for some period of time - accessing CompuServe at 450 baud, I even verified my connection speed with one of their original SysOps that I was friends with and he was amazed that the "overclocking" thing actually worked.

Oh those were the fun times, most "kids" nowadays have no idea just how far we've come and they take all this for granted, sadly. Had a Tandy Model 100 and the acoustic coupler modem for a long time as well, I kinda miss that thing... ;) Did the Amiga thing as well, best personal computers ever made even to this day (and still the only true hardware-based multitasking PCs). Never got into Apple hardware, however, and I still don't.

My original CompuServe ID was 70010,410 - I was one of the original first 500 members when the service went live so long ago.

Anyway... sorry about the trip down Memory Lane but all the talk of baud rates just got me all nostalgic. :D

I'm using Preferred nowadays here in Vegas so a speed bump would be nice but, I'm not holding out for miracles, especially since they're going to bump the prices again. Was just reading this:

»www.techdirt.com/articles/201301···on.shtml

and wondering just how much the prices will continue to rise...
