[WIN7] Can't set microphone level above 70

I can't set the microphone level above 70 on my laptop. I'm running windows 7x64 SP1. As I'm using speech recognition so the volume level is critical. So I've even tried changing the registry value for the volume to a higher number and that didn't help either.
