JSJJJPremium join:2003-09-25 Lake Zurich, IL | [WIN8] Windows 8 / CD-DVD driver issue Upon installing Windows 8, the cd/dvd drive on my new Dell inspiron does not work properly. My computer has Intel Core i7-3612qm processor and is running 64-bit operating system.
This is the error message:
PLDS DVDRWBD DS-6E2SH has a driver problem The DVD playback device is not working properly
.Detected There are problems with the DVD playback device. Windows will take additional steps to further troubleshoot it.
The computer attempts to reinstall the driver to correct the issue but the issue does not get resolved upon successful installation.
When looking at the properties for the mentioned driver, you get this message: Device Status: Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
Dell says The only thing that would correct the problem is go back to windows 7.
Any thoughts????? Go Back to win 7????? LOL |

If you are able to, I would re-install Windows 8 using the install Media, and see if the problem comes back. If it does, maybe you have a bad install of Windows 8 (bad burn of the ISO to the DVD, scratched DVD, etc).

Also, can you check the following registry key?:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
At that registry key, in the right window, is there, under "Name", either an UpperFilters or LowerFilters value?
If so, for each of the UpperFilters and/or LowerFilters value, what is listed under "Data"? |

| One or both of those entries may be invalid.
Can you check the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder and see if either PxHlpa64.sys or GEARAspiWDM.sys exist in that folder.
If either or both are missing from the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder remove the corresponding registry entry.
If PxHlpa64.sys is missing then double-click LowerFilters and remove PxHlpa64 > OK
If GEARAspiWDM.sys is missing then double-click UpperFilters and remove GEARAspiWDM > OK
Create a system restore point beforehand and restart the computer afterward. |

JSJJJPremium join:2003-09-25 Lake Zurich, IL | reply to JSJJJ I just checked the drivers folder and both files exist. I do notice that the PxHlpa64.sys was last modified 3/19/2010. Maybe that means nothing, but every other driver was last modified in 2012. Any other suggestions? Thank you all for your time. |

| One or both of the two drivers may not be digitally signed or corrupted.
I would suggest to go ahead and remove the two entries to prevent these two drivers form loading.
You can actually remove the LowerFilters and UpperFilters values completely as these values are not present by default.
There is a Microsoft Support Article on this issue - click the solution under "Let me fix it myself":
»support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
The article also applies to Windows 8.
If you have an application that uses either of these drivers such as iTunes which uses the GEARAspiWDM.sys you may have to reinstall that application for the software to work properly.
Make sure you have the latest version of the software you need to reinstall.
If the problem then re-occurs may sure you have the latest version of the driver causing the issue.
For GearaspiWMD.sys install the latest Gear driver:
For PxHlpa64.sys contact Roxio or Dell, if applicable, for the applicable PX Engine update. |

JSJJJPremium join:2003-09-25 Lake Zurich, IL | First, thank you auggy for all your help.
Second, I wanted to tell you what I did to get the cd/dvd working. I started with creating a restore point. Then I deleted the 'data' under the LowerFilters name (which was the PxHlpa64). I restarted the computer and the same issue remained. Then I further deleted the 'data' under the UpperFilters name (which was the GEARAspiWMD). I restarted the computer again and sure enough, the drive started to work great. Like you stated before, that GEARAspiWMD driver is used by Itunes also. Thinking about it, I now believe the dvd drive started acting weird after i installed itunes. In conclusion the issue must be a compatibility issue between itunes and windows 8 regarding the GEARAspiWMD driver.
The only issue that itunes has now that i changed the registry, is that I am not able to import or burn to dvd's / cd's via itunes. That isn't a big issue of mine. However, It asks for me to just reinstall itunes to fix this problem. I am afraid if I reinstall itunes this same issue will happen with the DVD drive. Do you think if i reinstall itunes the problem will come back? |

| You're welcome for the help.
The only change that appears you made that would affect iTunes is removing the registry entry for the GEARAspiWMD.sys driver.
So, rather than reinstalling iTunes, try just installing the latest Gear driver which should restore the registry entry but will also install the latest GEARAspiWMD.sys driver
