| voip ata and a wifi tether Anyone know of a router that may rebroadcast a wifi signal or some way to use a cell phone wifi tether (Samsung S3) and an ATA ?
Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: i think i could use a wifi repeater, but curious of any other ideas and if a repeater is the only option, curious what is recommended. |

 | I did that once. Cellphone (GNex) in hotspot mode, WRT54GL in client mode with ATA LAN'd in.
Doesn't work that well though, Rogers is congested as hell in my area. |

 | reply to Tx The easiest way is Client mode on the router but with two wireless links it pushes your luck. I've done it and it works but don't be surprised if conditions vary a great deal.
There are routers that will accept a SIM card and others that can use USB for data sticks and sometimes if you're lucky will work with USB tether to the smart phone.
The other thing to consider is a VoIP app on the smart phone itself. That's the easiest and most reliable if you're going to use cell data either way. |

|
 | reply to Tx I wonder if you could get USB tethering to work?
Some routers have USB port and alternate firmwares (tomato shibby or toastman) advertise support for 3G USB sticks. |

I mean anyone could solve this issue with a decent repeater and not even mess with their main router which isn't a horrible idea... Thinking up ideas to toss a wifi setup in our RV |

 | In theory it can work but it isn't point and click easy. You need to use command line and scripts in most cases. Some dedicated data sticks will work but your phone and many sticks such as those with an SD card slot for example won't work without specific tweaks. |

Not sure if you're talking about a repeater or not but this one »www.canadacomputers.com/product_···d=049673
Is pretty basic, just pricey |

 | No, I'm talking about 3rd party firmware with USB/3G support such as Tomato. Certain data sticks will work from the GUI but many or most require some command line tweaks. There are too many "standards" and too many secrets. |

 | reply to Tx the Ubnt air router has a nice client interface. It can be setup in WDS provided it's in wep mode, but then you're in wep mode....
Best best is to have 2, one as a client, and another Access point |

JonFPremium join:2012-11-22 Chatham, ON | reply to Tx I've done it with the Wifi repeater function/mode in a WRT160n running DD-WRT. It does work, and also allows you to sit out at the camp fire with your laptop/tablet. (freaked people out a bit, because I forgot to change the SSID from "CIA Security Van #4)
P.S. Make sure you have your S3 (or whatever 3g/4g device) plugged into power, as my S3 lasted MAYBE 4 hours, and was pretty warm. |

 | cabled to your laptop or the router itself is a handy place to keep it charged as you tether.
Portable external battery packs are also good when you have to position high on a tree branch to get signal. |

I'll have to name my ssid something simular ... be fun |

hahahaha... Be ready to have some paranoid neighbors....
I did exactly what you are trying to do. The only thing I remembered (as I was thinking about this on my lunch) is to have your Cell number forwarded to your voip service as well, as to not disrupt the data stream. I know advertised you can talk and surf at the same time, but in my experience, when you get out in "the sticks", it has a tendency to drop one over the other. (in my experience anyways.)
