Digital Imaging and Photography → [Tech] Camera Choice

Have an old D70 and a D200, looking to upgrade before an upcoming excursion into the mountains and jungles of S.America.

I'm trying to decide between a used D300 ($650) or a new D90 ($790). I have several lenses of quality so Nikon it must stay. I also have 4 batteries (EN-EL3e), CF cards, and remote trigger that will only work on cameras up to the D90. I would prefer not to have the added expense of getting completely new batteries.

I know that image quality is similar between them, but the shutter and body are more durable on the D300 I hear. Plus the used D300 is significantly cheaper.

Any input would be valuable.

I don't see that much of a difference in going from a D70/D200 combo to a D90 or D300... why not sell the D200 and use the cash to put it towards a used D700... those are going for about $1200-1400... the D700 will use the same batteries, CF cards.. you'll get full frame, much better ISO, more focus points, etc...

Well the color and noise levels mostly. I don't really want to move to the D700 though, mostly because of the price ($1550) and the fact that I don't have any full frame lenses. The D200 will only fetch about $200-300 used.

Edit: They just price dropped both, $650 for the D90 and $500 for the D300. Options?

I would go for the D300 because of the build, sharpness, iso... just IMO. Nothing wrong with the D90, especially if you want to dabble in video...

I agree with the final choice. Although the D90 is a very capable camera, the D300/D300s would be the way to go. Good weather sealing on those. I got dunked by a rogue wave at Peggy's cove N.S. in 2010. My D200 got soaked with salt water. After some really quick first aid, that body shows no signs of any damage. The D300 would do well in humid jungles for that reason.

If you want a smaller, lighter body then consider the D90. It has the option of video which may be something you may want to use on your trip.

I think I'll go with the D300 then, the weather conditions are a big concern, as is battery life since I'll be away without power for quite a while (D200 has really terrible battery life). Fortunately, video isn't a huge concern to me since I also have a Panasonic HDC-TM700 that I'm bringing along just in case. Any major differences between D300 and D300s other than minor upgrades in the usual areas and the ability to use SD cards?

Alright, so the D300 I wanted is sold.

I now have the choice between a new D90, used D300s, or refurbished D7000. All are around $750, the sale on the D7000 ends tomorrow so any responses would be appreciated. Options?

Me? I'd probably go for the D300s merely for it's robustness. Then again, I'm a Pentax shooter and am used to only using rugged bodies.

I went for the D300S, mostly because of it's robustness and ability to use 10-pin based GPS units which are cheaper.
