UPS shipping, weather, Canada

Before Christmas, I had shipped an order to a customer outside of Montreal via UPS. Just a bit ago, I rec'd an "exception" email, which I presumed was the typical customs related delay. Nope, not that.... As the title indicates, it's weather-related:

Adverse Weather May Cause Delay
Weather conditions might delay delivery of this shipment. This is the most current information available. Please track again later for status updates.

Around here, if we get an inch of snow, the media makes it out to be the end of the world, no one should dare go out in this, conditions are "treacherous" (seems to be their favorite word), etc. I have to wonder, how BAD does it have to be in parts of Canada like Montreal to impact them ? Weather Channel says 2-4" today, 0" inches tomorrow, and nothing after that.

Have you looked at the weather the last few days? N NE and Canada getting hammered causing major delays and cancellations. And if totally ground roads aren't great either with highways getting closed down for periods of time.

And on the order of FEET not inches.

If planes were grounded (like they were up here in NE) in areas where UPS had to fly into this will cause the delays you are seeing.

Montreal got hit pretty hard. And I'd imagine that they'd be travelling up the 401. Keep in mind, too, that December 25 and 26th are both holidays here. (26th is boxing day) Anyway, Montreal I think got 18". And no, they aren't used to heavy storms. Give them until Saturday...at least.

They're ground shipments, not air. And holidays aren't the factor, this was a specific notice related to possible delays from weather.

It's not a big deal, I just thought it was odd or even funny that UPS would use inclement weather (snow) as an excuse. On the other hand, they've been using anything related to weather outside of blue skies and sunny as a possible excuse.

Well again due to the storms many highways have been closed for periods of time and the going slow regardless. Also likely UPS was consolidating trucks to both compensate, and reduce at risk traffic, vs a regular schedule of trucks by time alone... full or not.

I have very rarely had UPS be late, or get such a notice, but get very little from or send to the NE in winter. But even with hurricanes along the way or here they have been on time unless the island was actually on pre or post storm lock down. Even then they (Fedex, USPS, etc) and food trucks were the ones let through after, though retail stuff and car traffic still not.

Montreal got 18" of snow on Thursday. Winds were gusting to 40 mph and the snow drifts were 3 feet deep. Some people spent 4 hours stuck on highways for what is normally a 30 minute trip. That would certainly affect UPS trucks.

I took the above photo Thursday afternoon. The small bumps on the right side are cars buried up to their windshields. The minivan in front of them is stuck in the snow, and that's after the owner spent 2 hours trying to dig it out.

No, not yet, but no indication it's weather-delayed at this point.
