Re: [Northeast] Speed Fluctuations In The Evening..North NJ

Switching to Level3 DNS may not be a good idea at this time. Give Comodo's DNS servers a try:

8.26.56.26
8.20.247.20

It says my DNS Servers is 192.168.1.1 lol how the heck can that be? I'm pretty sure I'm using verizon's DNS Servers though, I never bothered to change it since I never really had any problems until recently. Before this when I had comcast, I was using Level 3's DNS Servers and never had a problem. Maybe I'll switch to them and see what happens.

Actually I just checked on my router page and it says

71.250.0.12
71.242.0.12

Your traceroute is perfectly fine until you leave Verizon's network at step #7. The next jump in latency from single digits to 20-40ms is Abovenet Communications. From there, you hit Facebook servers with 50-150ms latency. This is something Verizon CANNOT control. This is like sitting in a Ferrari in 5pm L.A. traffic wondering why you can't do 200Mph.

What DNS servers are you using? Sometimes free public DNS servers like Google's make things slower by masking your location(IP address) and telling the CDN to pick the server closest to the DNS server instead of your location. Not on the Verizon network where the slow down is, Verizon can't fix other company's networks or under powered servers

I don't know where the problem is happening, all I know is it's getting real annoying and verizon needs to fix it. I called up to have them check things out from their end and of course it would come back good on their side and did nothing to fix it, except have me install this optimizer crap which didn't help.

Latency and speed tests always come up good on their side because they never test out of their own network. Until the peering between Level3 and Verizon is improved there's nothing the script-fed tier 1 support guys can do for you. You can always send Level3 a strongly-worded letter

I've posted before about similar issues. I've actually given up on Verizon fixing this problem. I don't actually believe it is Verizon's fault though. Wherever the data is sent, once it goes through some other network, I believe that is where the congestion is happening. It would be nice if our entire infrastructure was revamped. In a few years 4K tv's will start to become the norm. Eventually streaming services like netflix might even stream in 4K. Everyone talks about jobs in this country, well build up our infrastructure.

Not really slow here in central Jersey, but the ping issue has surfaced again tonight. Pings tonight were 50-100ms again and went back down to normal after 11pm. Trace route shows the same latency problem at NYC Level3 hops again. This issue seemed fixed, but is back as of Wednesday night...

Sometime last week I don't remember when, I would notice around 6 pm my speeds would fluctuate on and off. I go to speedtest.net and run multiple tests, all bringing back mostly close to what I should be getting 150/65 but when I go to download stuff from the web..I get crappy results. For example like 40 mins to download a 1 gb file when it normally takes me like 1 minute, wtf is up that?. Even when I try downloading from usenet my speeds aren't maxed, but I get decent results far better from my web downloads which are only getting like 600 KB/sec. And this would happen until around 11 PM then things would slowly go back to normal, but I really don't understand what verizon is doing and they need to fix it fast.
