Abandon ware: Earth and Beyond MMO

EA had launched Earth and Beyond, a space MMO, a while ago. I was a Beta tester for the game, as well as paid subscriber for a year. Anyhow, the game didn't have as many subscribers as EA would have liked, so they killed the game.

A group of people worked hard at recreating the server side of the software. They re-launched the game as a free to play game.
So if your looking for a Space MMO that is free to play, give Earth and Beyond a try.

How did they get the rights to release this game?

What's it similar to? Vendetta? EVE? X3? Escape Velocity? I just see a download link, nothing that gives an overview of the game.

Edit: Found screenshots here: »www.earthandbeyond.ca/home/marke···als.html It appears to be 2004-2006 graphics, but they throw in first-person on-station and it looks like you can land on planets, or perhaps travel there.

You can land on space stations and planets, and travel with in the stations. No real travel on the planet itself.
The graphics/game is dated, because there is no "official" support from EA.
It was ok, more along the lines of Vendetta.

No idea. I think EA just gave up on it. So the people recreated the server, and just used the client that was available.

I have a boxed copy of this sitting on my shelf in the computer room. If memory serves me though, I quit playing prior to them shutting the servers down due to a lack of content. If you start playing let us know how it is Snake.

On another note: Anyone play the game Shadowbane? It let you build towns and have wars against other guilds, open world PvP. Great crafting system....and something I thought would catch on with every other mmo but never did...Speed boosts while running on roads!!!!!!!! (not sure why no other dev has ever done this, but it was a brilliant idea imho.)
