google results redirect to unresolved ip address

My friend's computer keeps getting re-directed to different websites with unresolved ip addresses.

I have used malware-bytes and spybot S&D. What else can I try?

Re: goole results redirect to unresolved ip address

Sounds like the HOSTS file has been modified by malware. It may not be possible to fix the HOSTS file if malware still has control of it.

I'd try using an offline virus scanner. That is one that is run from a USB stick/CD/DVD etc rather than in a running Windows system.

do you recommend on that I can use?

After looking at the host file, it does not seem altered. It is empty with the defaults.

I use Microsoft's Windows Defender Offline but I think Malware-Bytes has one too (not sure if it's free like WDO).

Sounds like a browser hijack then.

Another note: This occurred with chrome only and not internet explorer.

I am surprised there are no regular scanners to get rid of this. Maybe I will unintall chrome.

Re-installing chrome "seems " to have solved it
