cchheettLamb Of GodPremium join:2001-04-02 Eagle Creek, OR | Im sick of Astraweb. Any better usenet? I have a very slow DSL to start with and I am having issues with astraweb. I am curious if there are any providers that anyone could suggest.
I have slow dsl, but its very consistant. I get 6.93 mbps down "just did a speed test" Some times Astraweb uses half the speed. I check a speed test just to make sure im getting full internet but Astraweb makes it slow. So i assume its Astraweb. Sometimes they are good speeds, but im getting tired of it. Thanks for any info. -- A.B.Mult.Horror

| I'm just guessing but it might well be your provider. I've used Astraweb for years and while I've had problems with their completions mostly their speeds have been consistent. Have you tried running a line test here on the site? -- Who said: "In a nation that was proud of hard work, strong families, close-knit communities, and our faith in God, too many of us now tend to worship self-indulgence and consumption." |

I have a 50meg download pipe and many days now I can't get better than 2/3 meg down. I tried different ports thinking maybe TimeWarner is throttling my Usenet connection but the speeds are not improving. |

Selection and downloading have be great. |

| reply to cchheett I think supernews/giganews uses better data centers.. so that's why I'd recommend them.. and their completion has always been top notch.. I recall astraweb not being so like that.. of course there is dmca.. but that's every provider these days.. it'd be great if we could say X provider never gets hit with dmca.. let me know when that happens |

mmI Did It My WayPremium join:2001-04-07 Summerville, SC | reply to cchheett Astraweb is just all over the place with speeds. Today it's full speed, i am getting 52meg down with the NewsBin meter. Yesterday I could not get better than 18meg down. |

 | reply to cchheett I just switched to supernews after being with astraweb for a few years. Their bandwidth has been all over the place and the last few months have been quite bad. So far with supernews I've been maxing out my connection (60mbit). -- "Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do, and they will surprise you with their ingenuity." -George S. Patton |

 | reply to cchheett Right now im getting a lot a files not found on new files both on Astraweb and Easynews, anyone know a good EU provider? |
|
 | reply to cchheett Astraweb has both U.S. and European servers (see the Astraweb site for details--I think you may have to sign into your account). Did you try the other one that you are not using? |
|
 | reply to cchheett Astraweb's level of service has been steadily in decline in the last year: problems uploading files, speed issues, and articles missing from certain date ranges. They use to be rock-solid but I think there is something going on behind the scenes. I cancelled them not because of the issues mentioned though but because of their auto-DMCA stance. Sorry just can't deal with a company that doesn't bother giving its users the benefit of the doubt. |
|
 | Supernews has been having issues for me the past few weeks where files older than 800 days have been failing, either incomplete or not available. Hopefully it's a brief issue that can be quickly resolved.
Outside of this issue I have to admit Supernews has been great. |
|
 | reply to sandman_1 Sandman would you mind sharing who you went with?
I just tried supernews and they have the same articles missing issue. |
|
 | I only use free servers now, 5 total. I am not going to say what they are but they are easy enough to discover if you have a desire to found out. |

Selection and downloading have be great. I wonder if it may be related to this: We no longer accept 2CheckOut
Posted By: Alex On: 28 Dec 2012 7:49 PM Details We no longer accept 2CheckOut
We will no longer be working with 2CheckOut. Unfortunately, all users that are billed under 2CheckOut will slowly be migrated over to our other billing processors once their subscription has lapsed. You will still get the full length of your subscription.
When your subscription lapses, you will get an email on how to reactivate your account.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
I also ran across this while reading Astraweb's latest News items and announcements: Header Downloads will be Counted
Posted By: Alex On: 29 Dec 2012 7:41 AM Details 20% of Header Downloads will be Counted
As of 5th Jan 2013, 20% of your header downloads will count towards your download quota for Pay By Download accounts.
For example, if you download 10MB of headers, 2MB will be deducted from your Pay By Download balance.
Unfortunately we have had to take this drastic move due to the number of users abusing the system. For normal users that do not abuse the system, the impact is minimal to your everyday use.
Unlimited monthly account holders will not be affected.

 | reply to SCADAGeo I have read that the indexers, both personal and private are using block accounts for the Newznab to get the headers. This is sort of like "plugging" that hole I guess. |

I think abuse is a strong word for them to call it though. More like something they didnt consider when they allowed free headers. -- Usenet Block Accounts | Unlimited Accounts |
