Awful business commercial service in Manhattan.Verizon DSL was pretty bad, so we decided to switch to Time Warner business cable. I remote into the office machine late at night to get some work done. I noticed it was terribly slow. Over $80/mo gets us this. Pinging google.com [74.125.236.34] with 32 bytes of data:

Ping statistics for 74.125.236.34:

We get 6.7 mbps down still, but what is the use with worse than satellite latencies? Does Time Warner actually expect us to pay for this? |

Its a little hard to comment on the limited information posted. 6.7 down would be hard with latencies like that. You have a trace to see where the issue is? Is this something that is continual or just a one off? How were you remoting in?

I use radmin.
Getting better, but still disgusting. I've only had time warner set up for one day. It felt slow, but I didn't take time to do a formal check until just now.

Unfortunately for you, that slowdown is clearly inside Google's network. The times are all <20 ms until well into Google's network. Try changing your name servers. By using a different name server you might get a address in a different part of Google's network which isn't suffering from this problem. If you could post traceroutes to other (non-Google) servers that would be great too. /M |

Agreed, no issues on the TWC network there, which would explain the speed test results.

I was trying to make a phone call and I could barely hear anyone. I use voicepulse, and have a Cisco switch that has some good QoS for prioritizing VoIP packets. I also was not downloading anything at the time on any machine here. Tracing route to yahoo.com [98.138.253.109]

Yes. If I call at 6, I'm still on hold at 8, at which point it's time to leave. I originally switched because verizon wouldn't waive the $150 installation fee for our new location. We were opening a second store and were going to get DSL there, they still wanted $150 for that $3 westell modem POS they give out and $150 for install. Time warner agreed to waive the fee for install and modem if we got two locations at the same time, so I switched. This is what I get for being cheap. |

Same thing.
This only happens after 8 PM. 8 PM to 4 AM is unusable. I'm not at work during this time, but I do a lot of work remoting into the office computer. Today was the first time it happened before closing, at 7:45 I was unable to conduct a phone call with ping times over 500 ms.
