Re: LCBO to open "Express Kiosks" in ON grocery stores

Granting monopolies to billion dollar for-profit enterprises without allowing competition between those private enterprises seems pretty damn immoral to me, and most people here.

So the question are you willing to pay out the money the LCBO generates for the province in extra taxes?

You'd be looking at a minimum of an extra $80/year in extra taxes that the govt would take just to cover the $1 billion that the LCBO puts into the gov't coffers.

I personally would much prefer to keep my $80/year given that I haven't spend more than $20 at the LCBO in the past two years.

I sure don't see you here saying that we should re-open the flood gates to cigarette advertising in an effort to generate extra revenue for the province despite the social costs.

You also seem to think it is fine and dandy for the province to say that alcohol is bad and the social costs are horrendous and as a result we should be the only ones selling it - and as a high cost to discourage drinking, no less - out of one side of their mouth, but they're saying "hey, drink drink drink! drinking is good! come to the LCBO!" and allowing any and all alcohol manufacturers to advertise along with them to encourage consumption of their products out of the other side of that same mouth.

So in other words, you're just as big a hypocrite as the province and LCBO. Thanks for clearing that up for us.

First off, I never said anything about smoking and really it is unrelated to this discussion.

Secondly, alcohol is bad. I personally know someone who died of alcoholism and my wife's father also died of alcholism.

Third, find some ads to back up the BS your spewing. Every ad I can think of on TV from the LCBO has always been about social responsibility. Ads about specific alcohol brands have always been produced by the maker that may at the most have a blurb on the end saying that it is available at your local LCBO.

Every few weeks, the LCBO lets you feast your eyes on yet more images of glamorous drinks flanked by gargantuan photos of shimmering olives, ripe pineapples, succulent mangoes and gleaming jewelry. Plus predictably glowing reviews of every single featured wine, beer or spirit.

Every issue is dressed up like a poor man’s Vanity Fair or Condé Nast Traveller: You can leaf through a virtual Italian travelogue brimming with wine, pizza and pasta, adorned by riveting recipes. Or a slick “Cocktail Hour” insert promoting “Vodka’s Timeless Appeal” with lavishly illustrated shots of “classic cocktails” and Parisian hotels.

The LCBO prints about 725,000 copies of each issue for insertion in Ontario’s major newspapers — which keeps publishers, including my own, happy. But why does our provincial wine merchant crank out these slick magazines, chock full of schlock? Why does our state-owned monopoly feel the need to promote consumption?

Because the government is addicted to sales growth from alcohol.

Here's the topper to all this. The LCBO has one of the largest marketing organizations in Canada. They have no fewer than six vice-presidents in charge of different aspects of marketing, including general sales and marketing, retail operations, store development, merchandising, public relations, and even something called "marketing and customer insights" that studies the most effective ways to ply their customers with booze.

They've got radio ads with seasonal content just about year round.

Radio ads are a bit tougher to find online than TV ads, but here's a release about their Summer Beer campaign from 2011: »www.marketingmag.ca/uncategorize···ws-32530

quote:
“The biggest thing we are trying to show with this promotion is we have over 340 beers from 42 different countries,” said Trina Hendry, LCBO’s media relations consultant.
And straight from the LCBO, they answer why they do promotional marketing: »hellolcbo.com/app/answers/detail···arketing
quote:
The LCBO has a responsibility to its suppliers to promote the products they display in our stores and advertising is a key element that helps bring our Discover the World brand vision to life.

No it's not, and you won't be able to make any successful argument that says anything different no matter how hard you try.

You can stop the self-righteous bullshit right here and now. I have several alcoholics in my family - both in the process of recovery and well, well off the wagon thinking that their life is fine and that they don't have a problem. Some of them are in my very close family, not merely in-laws. You're not telling me anything I don't already know or haven't experienced myself.

There is no BS. It's straight up hypocrisy. I see a constant barrage of Smirnoff, Bacardi and lord knows what other alcohol companies peddling their product for me to see. Then there's the beer commercials over and over again begging me to buy their products and win trips to the mountains of Colorado. The LCBO recently had an ad campaign that said you can find anything you need at the LCBO with a catchy tune that was all over the TV and radio. All of these companies are encouraging you to buy their products, and the LCBO is happy to advertise the fact that you can buy them there.

You argue this is all about tax revenue. You know what else generates tax revenue? Cigarettes. Cigarettes both have a heavy social burden on our society through health care expenses. Both have the potential for addiction. Yet, here we are, and I see all those ads on TV begging me to buy alcohol products and that I can buy them at the LCBO, yet cigarette advertising is completely banned to the point where you can't even see them in the store.

You can cry about someone pointing out the hypocrisy of your argument all you want, but the truth of the matter is that just because you don't like someone pointing out how wrong you are does not make it any less so.

*Sigh* Really? Alcohol is bad? Says who? Several studies that alcohol in small doses is actually good for you.

The overconsumption of alcohol is bad, no shit, but so is most things. Hell drink too much water and it could kill you.

... then wouldn't you be against the LCBO for selling and promoting alcohol to alcoholics?
