 | Power Mac G5, ios 5.8, is its time up? It's going on 10 years for my 20 inch cinema display, and 9 years on my 1.8 dual g5 Power Mac since purchased. It is becoming more difficult to deal with system hangs and the spinning beach ball of death. The problem seems to be web-sites utilizing Adobe Flash causing my system to hang, and the only way to solve this requires force quitting the browser to stop it. I have tried both Safari, and Firefox for browsers, but no luck. I have tried repairing permissions, verifying the disc using my disc utilities application. Yesterday, I was unable to log on to pay a credit card bill, and was told that my browser is no longer supported. Is it time for an Intel based Mac, and new monitor? |

You can also install Clicktoflash (available as a Safari Extension) which will prevent flash from loading unless you allow it to. »extensions.apple.com
In general, it might be a good idea to start thinking about a new computer. It will be significantly faster than your current Mac.
You should be able to find an adapter to hook up your Cinema Display to whatever new computer you purchase. -- University of Southern California - Fight On! |

| reply to dbamber It was good to read that you are still rocking with a PowerPC-based Mac. I have a PowerMac G4 Quicksilver that I still play with MacOS 9.22 (mostly for older games).
I do believe it is time for a new Intel-based Mac, but the 20-inch Cinema Display is still good. Most apps released today require an Intel processor and I haven't seen a PowerPC app in a long time. To be able to run the latest MacOS X, you will definitely need Intel.
I have a Mac Pro (1,1) that I bought 7 years ago. I am still using my 20-inch Cinema Display, dual-displaying with a 23" LG display. When MacOS X 10.8 came out, I knew that my Mac Pro is going to be obsolete soon, since it cannot run 10.8.
I agree with Thinkdiff to get Click-to-Flash, a Safari extension. I use it all the time.

| reply to dbamber Flash has gotten so bloated and horrible anyone with PPC equipment really needs flash block or click to flash. It won't even load.
Flash chugs on modern hardware too.

| reply to dbamber You and me are in the same boat i discovered the mac mini after all this time lol...i had never really paid it any attention at all. I went to the apple store which i may do every 8 or 9 months then played around with for a bit, found out that i liked along with the top end price (no comma in it) so in the next few week i'm to take the leap that will lead to the retirement of the G5 ppc -- Think Ahead. | reply to dbamber I'll second Thinkdiff with Clicktoflash. Awesome extension, works as advertised.
Also, keep the monitor. Perhaps buy a Mac Mini -- they're pretty speedy. I see that the Apple Store has a refurb quad-core for under $760. »store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/s···mac_mini -- If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. - Albert Einstein |

 | reply to dbamber Well I broke down last night, and ordered a base model 27 inch iMac from Amazon.I would like to thank thinkdiff for his clicktoflash suggestion which has really helped on a lot of sites. I still suffer from slowdowns on some sites (Apples website doesn"t seem to be very PPC friendly). I chose the 27 inch imac due to its ability to add ram, and having twice the ram capacity of the mini, along with better graphics. I chose Amazon over Apple due to the fact that for now there is no sales tax in Arizona (the local rate in the town I live in is 9.73%). 12 months 0 APR didn't hurt either. For all who posted with their comments/suggestions, thank you. |

neuronbobTHERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS. NONE. join:2000-03-30 Bedford, OH | reply to dbamber Still have my G4 MacMini. Unfortunately, my 6-year-old son, to whom I have gifted this previous office computer, loves to play Flash games on the Cartoon Network website and the G4, even with maximized memory, is simply not good enough and I can't upgrade the OS any further than it is.
I'll therefore have to consider paying for an Intel Mini. So OP, I understand where you are coming from.
I also still have my G4 Quicksilver, which I still use to do my taxes every year. Most of my computing, though, is on my MacBook Pro. -- neuronbob.com |
