| [Cable] modem on videotron land? according to TSI website I can only use:
dcm-425 on 5 & 8 megs
dcm-475 on 20 & 30 megs.
do I have to buy both modems for example if I use 8megs and later want 20megs?
or can l order 20megs with dcm-475 and later downgrade to 5 or 8 using dcm-475?
looks like I may have a huge expense to future proof.

| DCM475(or DCM476) can be used for all of the tiers. However, DCM425 only supports up to the ~18 mbps tier. So if you want to futureproof (and I highly recommend you do), then get the DCM475/DCM476.
An another advantage to getting the better modem is with congestion, you might be able to better maintain speeds with the newer DOCSIS 3.0 modems. |

| thanks for the reply, although yes I can get the dcm475 for all tiers, I've read a thread somewhere here (couldn't find it anymore) that videotron would not activate customer dcm475 on 5 & 8.
would be great if it can work on lower tiers (dcm475), less congestion and max speeds ~300megs down/ ~100 megs up. |

There was some confusion as to whether Videotron did backwards compatibility, they do offer that, so you can use a DOCSIS 3.0 modem on the 2.0 speeds.

cheap modems are going on kijiji for 20-30$ in the list they provide. They're D2 modems, not D3. |

From what I know / saw ... on the 5M ONLY Docsis 2 modems are accepted. For the 8M BOTH modems are accepted. For 20M and 30M ONLY Docsis 3 modems are accepted. |

sounds good. according to TSIElizabeth's post above, Videotron would allow...
worst case..., order high tier with dcm-475, then later downgrade speed package.
Rickkins: that kijiji ad looks like they're selling modems in a depanneur (according to google maps)? hmmm?
