Even before the days of cellphones, I was on call 24x7 being responsible for a 24 state telecom/datacomm network and staff. Instead of a cellphone I had a pager. There are many jobs like that today - they just use texts and emails and phonecalls instead. Sure, I had a staff that handled much of the calls. But when I got called, it was usually a disaster in the making and the VP of I/S and the COO of the railroad was involved. -- A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
