Apple → file transfer to iphone

Bought my daughter a iphone 5 for Christmas and I would like to transfer her files that on her ipad and sync to her laptop to the new phone.

Is it just a matter of plugging the new phone to her laptop openning itunes and hit sync??

I dont want to erase what she has on the laptop.

Sync'ing another iOS device to the laptop will not remove anything from the laptop; so yes, start up iTunes on the laptop, connect the iPhone and select in iTunes what you want to sync from the laptop to the iPhone.

iTunes will keep track of what is synced to the iPad and what is synced to the iPhone separately.
