Defiance is a new mmo by Trion. They produce the MMO Rift. What makes Defiance different is that it will also be a weekly TV series on the SyFy chann.
The "back story" [what I know of it], is that Earth was invaded by an Alien Race. That war devastated the earth, and those left alive now have to "pick up the pieces". -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? | I don't know if it will be free to play. Granted, I have yet to see a true "free to play" game. Meaning, if a game is free to play, then why must I pay to unlock content/features/buy add ons or power ups of the game?
*Note: I'm a "tad ticked" at one of my kids. He spent all his christmas money on Team Fortress 2 keys. Silly me, I thought TF2 was a free game.. lol. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? BTW there will never be a "truly f2p" persistent online game like a MOBA or MMO (EDIT: without at least cosmetic microtransactions). Why would anyone go to all the trouble and expense of designing and maintaining a game and then offer every bit of it for nothing? Even on Facebook there are ads and microtransactions. |

 | reply to Snakeoil this looks like the biggest red neck mmo ever..
why does every screen shot i see of the game have atvs in it? |

Very ambitious, and Rift was great, but I have my doubts.
Edited to make sense. |

| reply to bionicRod Correct. But it seems the first question about these types of games is :Is it free to play/how much to play. Which are fair questions. I think it would be "kool" if games were able to do what second life does. SL can stream video feeds from the internet, into the game. Of course the majority of those feeds are of "mature" or adult type [porn ads], but SL tried to clean up it's image a few years ago [been awhile since I logged into it]. But still, take a game where you are driving around a city with billboards. Instead of "static"/fake ads, they could pipe in ads from google adsense, or a business. Use product placement and such, to help reduce the games over heard.
Or like what World of Warcraft and Halo 4 did. Pay/work with a company to have game codes. The codes help power up a player or give in game item.
But yes I agree. Running a game takes money. From paying the power bill to run the servers, to paying the ISP so players have a connection. To paying the employees to take care of the game.
I still haven't tried it, but I'm getting more curious about Earth and Beyond. It's an abandonware game that fans of the game rebuilt the server software, and give out the client for free. They don't change anything, but accept donations. One stat I saw for the game claimed 40k regular players on a weekly bases. Doesn't seem like much, but considering the lack of advertisement, and being all player supported, that doesn't sound bad.
Back when I played Ultima Online, there were several player run servers. again, I have no idea why EA didn't go after them to shut them down, but they didn't. Players recreated the server software, then provided a connection. So you could play for free. I never risked it, because I didn't want my UO account banned by EA, if I goofed it up somehow.

| reply to I AM I dunno about the servers. I know DC online doesn't cross over their servers, or they didn't when I played.
Not sure about Vendetta online either. Vendetta is on Mac, PC, linux, and Andriod tablets [not sure if it's on IOS]. If I recall, they had just a small amount of servers, so I think they allowed everything to "cross over". -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? I think people have given up on that idea.
I'm curious as to how many actual human beings play WOW vs account subscriptions. As I am aware of a few people that have multiple accounts to WOW.
I dropped into a chat about Ultima online subscribers. They [EA] thinks there is about 60 to 100k people still playing UO. Which is different from the active accounts, which is much higher. Thats because some people [like me] have 2 or more accounts [I had 3]. So that inflates the subscriber base. So out of the 10 million active accounts WOW has, how many are owned by 1 person? -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |

So out of the 10 million active accounts WOW has, how many are owned by 1 person? It's probably a lot more then what Blizzard leads people to believe.
Just look at expansion sales numbers. MoP sold something like only 2 million copies in the first week. I don't know what the current total is, but wouldn't you think if they actually had 10 million people playing the game the expansion sales would be a lot higher that?
You can't tell me there are that many people out there still subscribing on a monthly basis, but choosing not to purchase new expansions. |

| We weren't in a hurry to get the new expan. As we weren't all that interested in returning to wow. Out of the 3, I am the only one still playing. my kids are back to Team fortress 2 and minecraft. For what ever reason, the grinding and the killing x number of [fill in the blank] got boring fast. I'm at that point on my lev 87 dk [I leveled a hunter to 90], and my alts are boring as well. I'll take a break after my 60 days are up. -- Is a person a failure for doing nothing? Or is he a failure for trying, and not succeeding at what he is attempting to do? What did you fail at today?. |
