I've tried using SSH in verbose mode. When the connection is successful, I get the whole stream of negotiations going on between client and server. When it's not successful, the connection times out as if the SSH client never gets a response from the server. So it looks like the connection is being blocked somewhere.

I wonder if the Mac you are connecting too has implemented something like the hosts.deny that can be found on other *nix systems. This could be used to block all requests.

On my server I use denyhosts to populate the hosts.deny file if too many invalid connection attempts come in. Extra layer of security.
