Re: [Cable] Youtube lags at night still, upgrade cache servers? said by geokilla:said by Sanek:said by geokilla:What's the point of these Google cache servers? Does that mean there are Twitch cache servers too?
I never had problems with YouTube except for this one night. They take the load off YouTube and save TSI money by staying within their network. So it saves the videos onto Teksavvy's servers? As I understand it, they are Google servers, but on Teksavvy network. To answer your question - basically it caches videos for a certain period of time, returning content to you without going to YouTube. The more popular the video is, the longer it's cached.
I also noticed that archived twitch.tv videos have some buffering issues lately - no problems with the live streams. Is Teksavvy caching those as well (would be different servers) or is that a twitch issue?
If this is properly maintained, it helps google by lowering the load on their main servers. Helps Teksavvy by staying within its network (so I assume it drastically lowers the network costs). Helps users by providing popular content faster (or at least it's suppose to) by essentially shortening the path packets need to travel.
All in all a pretty good thing for everyone - in theory and if it's maintained properly. |

 | TSI better not be caching anything themselves... goes against the spirit of network neutrality. |

 | reply to HKPolice Hello,
just wish to state I still have the same issue.
I am unable to steam 1080p youtube during the evening, it just keeps buffering all the time.
It doesn't affect my general download speed. always getting 25-30Mb/s.
I can also download youtube videos with my download manager at full speed no problem. it's only when watching them ON youtube that I have issues
[EDIT] Quebec City, Cable |

| reply to HKPolice It's been slow for me as well lately, and I'm just on ol' 6mbs.
And it's not just the Youtubes that have been slow as of late, trying to watch anything on CTV (usually London & Sudbury's news) it's been almost unbearable at times, most noteably on the ads that play before the video starts. - Adblock doesn't work on CTV.ca anymore fwiw. |

It's been a while, but not just Youtube, but videos nba.com as well. Whenever I turn on VPN, everything works fine. |

| reply to CyberCam For those that are still having issues, here's what I did to solve them.
First - I changed the DNS on my firewall to OpenDNS's 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220. Second - I plugged out my modem & firewall (pfSense) one night before going to bed, then the next day at noon I plugged it back in then Youtube is working great now!
A big KUDOS to John (from TSI) calling me today, in regards to my earlier post, you surprised me with that call out of the blue. I didn't even called them for support, I just posted on this thread... that was all I did. Again, TSI shows why they are number #1 in customer service.
Cheers! |

| reply to HKPolice 1) For the longest time, I never had any issues but now I do (in Ottawa).
2) Sometimes, even 360/480p videos have to buffer.
3) 1080p streams are buffering every second most nights and even now, 2pm on a Saterday.
4) I am already using OpenDNS.
5) I am OK with being contacted via PM or email to provide more technical information (or gather it) about the problem in order to get it resolved. It seemed like Ottawa was immune for the longest time but I see more and more users now around here are affected -- www.613websites.com ● Budget Canadian Web Design and Hosting

 | reply to HKPolice Jon F from TSI is looking into it. Obviously something is wrong when it defaults to 360p on a 1080p video. |

I do not believe this is a configuration/user issue...I know for sure it is not something on my end. This is a capacity issue...They either don't have enough caching servers given the traffic or TSI or Youtube's caching servers are just too slow for TSI users in Eastern Ontario....
I wonder if anyone on TSI in the West is experiencing these issues? I doubt it though, they are most likely using Google's own caching servers which I'm going to assume are faster than TSI's. However, I have not investigated myself further so I don't know who is to the blame...To figuire that out, I'd have to see which server I'm connecting to when playing a 1080p video for example. -- www.613websites.com ● Budget Canadian Web Design and Hosting
