Re: [Cable] Youtube lags at night still, upgrade cache servers? This has always been a youtube problem and never an ISP problem. |

 | reply to HKPolice Same problem here...Last night around 9:30, YouTube was freezing up every 30 seconds, buffering for 2 minutes and then freeze up again for another 30 secs. No issues during the day. South-West end of GTA

Would you lads mind PM'ing me the following details?
-Some form of contact info, account number, name, phone number etc -your IP address -your cable POI if you happen to know it -shoe size -whether you are downloading/uploading at the time
I'm working on compiling a master list of effected users to see if we can help narrow down the investigation with our NOC department.
Thanks! -- TSI PhilR - TekSavvy Solutions Inc. Manager, Escalations, Errors & Recovery Authorized TSI employee ( »TekSavvy FAQ »Official support in the forum ) |

 | reply to d4m1r said by d4m1r:said by evil_gusgus:Jon F from TSI is looking into it. Obviously something is wrong when it defaults to 360p on a 1080p video. I do not believe this is a configuration/user issue...I know for sure it is not something on my end. This is a capacity issue...They either don't have enough caching servers given the traffic or TSI or Youtube's caching servers are just too slow for TSI users in Eastern Ontario.... I wonder if anyone on TSI in the West is experiencing these issues? I doubt it though, they are most likely using Google's own caching servers which I'm going to assume are faster than TSI's. However, I have not investigated myself further so I don't know who is to the blame...To figuire that out, I'd have to see which server I'm connecting to when playing a 1080p video for example. They just added capacity and that didn't do anything to fix the issue. Honestly, I'm starting to think it's a flash issue or a configuration issue as it's not exclusive to YouTube. Metacafe and other video streaming are having the same issues. |

Metacafe and other video streaming are having the same issues. I do not use other video streaming sites, but by the diagnostics, this is a TSI or Google issue, not at the node, POI, home network, PCs, etc.
I'm thinking the TSI youtube caching servers are either slow or overloaded. Ideally, I would ALWAYS pull video's from Google's own servers (even if they are in CA) because with my connection speed, I don't care if the content is remote as buffering should be minimal. As well Google will have better control and knowledge of their own hardware than a local ISP (no offense to TSI). Not to mention capacity.... -- www.613websites.com ● Budget Canadian Web Design and Hosting

TSI GabePremium,VIP join:2007-01-03 Chatham, ON kudos:2 | We've checked and re-checked on our end and with Google. Everything is fine with the caching servers. We've reached out to the customers that have complained about the slow youtube streaming and a large majority have said that the issue has been fixed since google upgraded the node. Whatever is going on still is likely something else altogether. Either an issue with flash like it was pointed out or just plain congestion on your local connection.
Obviously we'll look into whatever it is but at this point I don't believe the caching servers are to blame -- TSI Gabe - TekSavvy Solutions Inc. Authorized TSI employee ( »TekSavvy FAQ »Official support in the forum )

TSI GabePremium,VIP join:2007-01-03 Chatham, ON kudos:2 | I'd also like to point out that Google manages the servers and we have no control over them other than where they sit in our network. We just have to make sure they have a big enough pipe which they do. (30Gbps total).
We had Google check on the users that provided their IP addresses and made sure they were being "served" properly. Everything checks out. |

 | reply to HKPolice Just a quick observation. I was watching a video just now and it kept buffering at 1080p. I ran a speedtest and it showed 20Mbps down, though 20 is not the full 28 I usually get, it should be enough to stream. So I decided to try loading the video in a different browser and:
My browser is Firefox and I have quite a bit of plugins loaded in it. I started playing the video in Chrome in a window right next to it and it loaded perfectly. Also tried IE and it loaded fine there too.
I then tested firefox with no plugins and it loaded fine, but what makes this completely inconclusive is that I restarted firefox again to load the plugins and the video loaded ok.
Just something I wanted to throw this out there to see if everyone that is experiencing this problem is also using Firefox with lots of add-ons. |
|
 | I honestly think it's an issue with Flash. That and Google's bandwidth conservation for YouTube has really put a damper on things. |

EDIT: I'm on the London (York) POI 28/1
Both 720p and 1080p both keep stopping having to buffer. I tried both flash and HTML5, both have buffering issues. |
|
 | reply to JMJimmy nope for me with my custom html5 youtube plugin still loading slowly |
|
1 edit | reply to HKPolice It's happening again right now: 9:19PM Monday night.
Almost every video I try to load is buffering multiple times every minute @ 1080p.
Some example videos:
»www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY2pWvjaYX0 streaming from 206.248.151.144
»www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUq0T_xLLVg streaming from 206.248.151.76 (newer server, seems to be a little faster but still buffers)
»www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqjAArA_RyI streaming from 206.248.151.79 (newer server, seems to be a little faster but still buffers)
I don't think it's a flash issue because I never have issues when off peak hours and also doesn't happen on 16Mbit DSL /w another ISP.
Edit: I just tried streaming all 3 videos @ the same time on different tabs and I'm only averaging 1MB/s compared to 100-600KB/s for a single video, so it doesn't seem like multiple connections are helping much.
Edit2: I just tried downloading off usenet @ the same time and overall download speed combined is 3.5MB/s which is exactly 28Mbit/s so I'm sure my POI or Local node is NOT congested. |
